First time to read Yarbro, and I am hooked! Love the "San Germane" Prince Charming of the darker arts! Great story line and easily a read by itself book. Though I now plan to find a few others!

The cover says "An Historical Horror Novel", but there's no horror here unless just having a vampire counts as horror. A vampire who's invariably kind to his victims, and needs their pleasure in order to fully satisfy himself. Anyway. This second novel set about 300 years prior to the first. Yarbro's pattern seems firmly set for all the books to come...St. Germain shows up, establishes himself in town, finds a willing female, and then gets caught up in the political intrigue of the time. After which, his secret comes very close to being discovered and he has to flee for his life. In the first two books he's turned his partner into a vampire as well, although I think she doesn't have that happen in every book. The historical part is interesting without being a lecture and provides a lot of places for the reader to go look things up. I learned a bit about the Medicis and Savonarola during this book...I'd heard the term "Bonfire of the Vanities" because of the Tom Wolfe book, but never before looked up where it came from.
