Pale Fire - Vintage International
Author: Vladimir Nabokov
In Pale Fire Nabokov offers a cornucopia of deceptive pleasures: a 999-line poem by the reclusive genius John Shade; an adoring foreword and commentary by Shade's self-styled Boswell, Dr. Charles Kinbote; a darkly comic novel of suspense, literary idolatry and one-upmanship, and political intrigue.

An amazing story within a story within a mad man's fantasy. This is the tale of a poet who is writing an epic poem about his own life and about the delusional neighbor who is convinced that the poem is about the fabulous life he believes he, himself, has lived. The writing, the plot, and the narrative are pure perfection. I first read this book in 1990 and I still remember it detail, still recommend it, and still consider it one of the finest works I have ever read. If you have enjoyed anything else by Nabokov, you must read this.
