They watched Danilo Silva for days before they finally grabbed him. He was living alone, a quiet life on a shady street in Brazil; a simple life in a modest home, certainly not one of luxury. Certainly no evidence of the fortune they thought he had stolen. He was much thinner and his face had been altered. He spoke a different language, and spok...  more »

Again, Grisham uses a troubled/scheming lawyer in dramatic fashion. I truely enjoyed the story from cover to cover. I was somewhat disappointed in the ending, but every book cannot be exactly how we want it. If you are thinking of reading this book, it is an easy, enjoyable read.

Easy read and very enjoyable. Hard to put down because you had to know what would happen next. And the ending is something I never would have expected.

Patrick Lanigan, a lawyer with a crumbling marriage and shifty partners who are planning to fire him, wants out. So he fakes is own death, steals $90 million from his former law firm, and disappears. Five years later, he gets caught...

One of Grisham's best novels for the sheer excitement of the fast-moving plot. Great pleasure reading.

Totally enjoyed this book. The amount of detail was perfect - not overbearing where you want to skip whole pages - not so light that you feel like you're missing something. Wonderful character development, the plot weaves in and out with lots of twists.

This is a good and exciting book to read. A shaky marriage, Job is about to get fire at the firm. Faking his own death and get away with 90 millions dollars. Get caugh after 5 years of running. Well plot and planning at the end. Although I didn;t like the end. I think the author own the character the story at the end. That why I think it did not make to the screen. Other wise, It is a good book, easy to read and follow.

The believability of this plot makes you want to read as much as possible in one sitting as possible. It seemed that with each page there was an unexpected twist and there were surprises throughout. This was a solidly written book that I enjoyed reading immensely.

He spoke a different language, and spoke it very well. But Danilo had a past with many chapters. Four years earlier he had been Patrick Lanigan, a young partner in a prominent Biloxi law firm. He had a pretty wife, a new daughter, and a bright future. Then one cold winter night Patrick was trapped in a burning car and died a horrible death. When he was buried his casket held nothing more than his ashes. From a short distance away, Patrick watched his own burial. Then he fled. Six weeks later, a fortune was stolen from his ex-law firm's offshore account. And Patrick fled some more. But they found him.

Taken from the back cover: Once he was a well-liked, well-paid young partner in a thriving Mississippi law firm. Then, Patrick Lanigan stole ninety million dollars from his own firm-and ran for his life. For 4 years, he evaded men who were rich, powerful, and would stop at nothing to find him. Then, inevitably, on the edge of the Brazilian jungle they finally tracked him down..."

A dead man can't run for ever. They kidnapped him in a small town in Brazil. He had changed his name and his appearance, but they were sure thye had their man. Four years before, he had been called Patrick S Lanigan. He had died in a car crash in Feb 1992. His gravestone lay in a cemetery in Biloxi, Mississippi. He had been a partner at an up and coming law firm, had a pretty wife, a new daughter, and a bright future. Six weeks after his death, $90 million had disappeared from the law firm. It was then that his partners knew he was still alive.
