The date is 1919 a time of unrest and drastic change. For Alena though life in Mississippi is perfect, and she prays she will never leave her home. That prayer is shattered when she makes a horrible discovery a discovery that leads her to challenge all she believes. From a quiet country setting, Alena is catapulted to Chicago, the " city of broad shoulders". There amidst the misplaced love, and post war confusion this outspoken young woman struggles to find herself and the one true thing that will save her. This is a story of despair and hope, betrayal and forgiveness, bondage and freedom. It is a story with medicine for the heart and balm for the soul.
Intense, well-written historical novel.
Excellent life story, a little religion, a little humor but NO cussing! Great book.
An eighteen year old black woman in Mississippi just after World War I finds her world is shattered after her best friend is lynched. For her own safety, she must move to Chicago, where she questions all she believes in.
This book blew me away! It really provided insight as to what negros went through during the period just after WWI. This was the first book I have read by this author, and I have immediately ordered anything and everything you has written.
Sharon Ewell Foster writes facinating books! I really enjoyed this one!
This book came in a grab bag box from CBD.com and I do not want to read it at this time.
This is a beautifully written book about the times in 1919 in Mississippi & Chicago, how God changed the hearts of 2 different women & used them to change a community. For those readers who are too young to know about the terrible days of Black hangings & burnings, this book will be an education in what life was once like in the U.S.
