Because I am a member of Best Friends Animal Society, I had read a lot about Katrina and the animal rescue in their magazine and newsletters. I still got a much more thorough picture of this historic time from the book. It includes the heartwarming stories of rescue and reunion with pet owners that you would hope for, as well as horror stories of finding dead animals and people and police killing the pets people left in the care or they came across on the streets. It was interesting to read about behind-the-scenes stuff like how the rescue camps were like mini cities and people bonded together like soldiers in combate or even Woodstock. Also, people don't realize how long it takes after a disaster like this for things to recover. There are still so many areas unrehabilitated and pets roaming the streets in feral-like condition, having babies. The books ends with the optimistic gains made in disaster relief and including pets in evacuation plans. Great book. I highly recommend it for all animal lovers as well as people interested in disaster relief and how societies cope with disasters.
