Good read, twists and turns until the end.

Another spell-binding mystery with Det. Inspector Lynley and Det. Sgt. Barbara Havers. Human relationships and murder in the Scottish Highlands.
I don't read many mysteries, but Elizabeth George is my favorite mystery writer, and this book didn't disappoint me. It held my interest to the very end. And her characters are very well developed, which is unusual for mystery writers, in my experience.

Elizabeth George is AMerican, but writes great British mysteries. This one is about a playwright. I'm a sucker for anything with theatre folks in it.
This is the second book in Elizabeth George's excellent series featuring Inspector Lynley and Barbara Havers. These books have been televised on PBS' Mystery series. Nothing beats the original books, however. Start the series with "A Great Deliverance".
Murder and suspects with deeply entangled relationships make this a fun read. Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley, a British aristocrat, and Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers--of working class origins--form the police team assigned to the case.
Great as always - phoentic writing of different dialects was a little difficult to follow at first, but a lot of fun to read (*and say HA!)
Elizabeth George is a master at involving you in the story so much so that you don't want to stop reading.

This is a good "modern English mystery" series, not too violent, a little dark, featuring some interesting character psychology. The plot moved slowly, the characters interesting but a bit stereotypical. The story was clever enough, however.
The career of playwright Joy Sinclair comes to an abrupt end on an isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands when someone drives an eighteen-inch dirk through her neck. Called upone to investigate the case in a country where they have virtually no authority, aristocratic Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley and his partner Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers grapple for both a motive and a murderer.
This was an excellent read. If you enjoy traditional murder mysteries a la Agatha Christie, I hightly recommend it.

I really like this series. I had watched the TV series, but I am enjoying the books. Lynley and Havers look completely different in the book. However, the personalities are about the same. The only down side of this story is the number of characters. I had a hard time remembering who was married to whom. The names were not familiar names so that didn't help. I had to go back and refresh my memory from time to time. Some of the same characters are the same from the first book. I think they will always play a part in each story. Maybe as I read more of the series I will get used to who's who.
