A fascinating account of the life and death of Janis Joplin. Author tells of her beginnings in a small Texas town where she was labeled the outcast & frequently persecuted by classmates for being different; her troubled teens and how she eventually made her way to California where she rose to the top before drugs & alcohol would be her undoing. Explicit accounts of her obsessive use of drugs & alcohol, her many sexual exploits - both with guys, girls & sometimes both. And of course, a vivid account of her music, concerts and experiences while touring around the country. You come away with a better understanding of who she was, but also feeling a little sad at the loss.

I love Janis Joplin, and reading this book, it isn't hard to see why. Ellis Amburn tells of her early days growing up in a town full of people who rejected her, and when she became famous, of her attempts to "rub it in the faces" of all those who treated her so badly. Janis never got over her insecurities, and this book tells of her sad spiral into drug addiction and loneliness that eventually cost her her young life.

Eye opening account of Janis's life. Was it really like this in the 60s? Wow.
What could she have become, if she hadn't died. That is the question.
