As usual, John Grisham is back with "The Pelican Brief", an irresistible story that begins with the simultaneous assissinations of two Supreme Court Justices... Late one October night Justice Abe Rosenberg, at 91 the Supreme Court's liberal legend, is shot in the head while sleeping in his Georgetown home. Two hours later Glenn Jensen, the Court's youngest and most conservative justice, is strangled, possibly by the same assassin. The country is stunned and baffled; the FBI has no clues......But Darby Shaw, a brilliant law student at Tulane, thinks she has the answer. Days of digging in the law library's computers have led her to an obscure connection between the two justices. She fleshes out her beliefs in a meticulous though wildly speculative brief that builds a strong case against a most unlikely suspect. Her suspect has powerful friends. One evening, outside a New Orleans restaurant, she narrowly escapes an assassin's car bomb. Some has read her brief. Someone wants her dead!!!!

Been a while since I read this one, but it was my favorite John Grisham book. The movie was ok, but in my opinion it was a somewhat feeble attempt at portraying the book. There are some complexities (storylines, character development) in the novel that just didn't translate into the movie. Even if you've seen the movie, you should read this one - the story will make more sense!

"In suburban Georgetown a killer's Reeboks whisper on the floor of a posh home....In a seedy D.C. porno house a patron is swiftly garroted to death...

The next day America learns that two of its Supreme Court justices have been assassinated. And, in New Orleans, a young law student prepares a legal brief...

To Darby Shaw it was no more than a legal shot in the dark, a brilliant guess. To the Washington establishment it was political dynamite. Suddenly Darby is witness to a murder - a murder intended for her. Going underground, she finds there is only one person she can trust - an ambitious reporter after a newsbreak greater than Watergate - to help her piece together the deadly puzzle. Somewhere between the bayous of Louisiana and the White House's inner sanctums, a violent cover-up is being engineered. For someone has read Darby's brief. Someone who will stop at nothing to destroy the evidence of an unthinkable crime."

Now she must try and stay alive long enough so that the killers can be exposed which isn't going to be easy since the evidence leads straight to the door of the White House. A great read

The action begins with the fierce assassinations of two Supreme Court justices. Too unlikely to be coincidental, the murders have no identifiable connection until a young law student uncovers a hidden link, exposing herself and those around her to deadly consequences. Heald uses the flexibility of his voice to conjure up a large cast of diverse characters. He crafts his delivery expertly, heightening the already substantial suspense and carrying the story to its dramatic conclusion.

Darby Shaw is a clever student who attends Tulane Law School. Her boyfriend is a Law Professor named Thomas. Shaw decides to find out why two US Supreme Court justices were murdered on the same day. She finds out that both Justices shared a love for protecting the environment. Then Shaw sets out to find who would benefit the most from the two deaths. She finds an industrialist who has big development plans. Then Shaw writes the Pelican Brief which is circulated by the FBI who do not put much stock in it. The brief going public tells the bad guys who Shaw is. A car bomb meant for Shaw takes out her boyfriend Thomas. The suspense mounts as Shaw is helped by Washington Post reporter Gray Grantham.

Two Supreme Court Justices are killed, and a young law student at Tulane in New Orleans comes up with a theory. Once the theory is shown to the FBI & CIA, it manages to get out to others, and people start dying. Who is the one who killed the justices, and why? And why chase the student? ANd how did the word of the brief, based in the Pelican State, get out to the killer?

A very intriguing story, involved, complex, and a welcome reads compared to the other books I've been reading. If you are ready to concentrate on a story, try this one. If you want light fun reading, please move elsewhere. Enjoy!
