Hollick brings her formidable talents to the romantic legend of King Arthur. Delving through various facts and folklore, the author spins a tale that demonstrates strength of love between the Queen Gwenhwyfar and himself while he seeks ways to bring peace to Britain. This is the second of three that the author shares with readers. She shows us a a man of war who can be brutal, committing atrocities he believes can only lead to the peace he seeks. Choosing alliances when he can, he crushes rebellions when he cannot.

And, if that is not enough the council opposes him on many turns. There are those who cling to Roman ways with the hope that Roman rule will return opposing Arthur and supporting power seekers leading rebellions. Some of them are on the council even wearing togas to demonstrate their beliefs. Arthur is not a patient man but he is determined to succeed and will do what he believes is right no matter who opposes him.

What's not to like about this age old story? It's a romantic, action packed and glorious tale. I can't wait to pick up the final book of this trilogy, The Shadow of the King (Pendragon's Banner, Bk 3).
