This is a love story. A story of love, longing, and escape BUT it also tells of growing up as an Indian in the 1940's. How the main character was treated by the whites heavily influenced her as a child and on into adulthood. Louise White Elk grew up in poverty, fear, and anger. This is beautifully written. To me this was a very sad book....I found it hard to believe people could have been treated like this.

On the reservation...Fiery-haired Louise White Elk dreams of both belonging and escape, and of discovering love and freedom on her own terms... A breathtaking tale of the American West, Perma Red is a tragic love story that unfolds against a clash of cultures - and a beautiful first novel. - - Library Journal

This is one of those books that everyone raves about, but I really didn't like it. I was never able to connect with or like any of the characters, most of whom just stumbled through a beautifully descirbed landscape, waiting for things to happen to them, and if they did take independent action, it was to run or to hurt someone else. Sorry. Not my thang.
