This most recently translated book takes up perennial practical issues that are of particular contemporary relevance. Dr. Tournier sets scientific technology, including psychotherapy, into a role complementary to the role of faith. By so doing, he is able to demonstrate the vital integrative powers of love and faith, even though they are scientifically intangible forces.
He demonstrates how the technology exposes the false pretenses of moralisms, while the essence of faith leads to morality. The differences between moralism and morality that he illustrates should prove to be of significant help to many, for as Tournier points out, conventional religious moralisms as an attempt to free the self only add a more crushing burden to the person, while true Chrisitan morality provides freedom and vitality.
In view of the current debates over the function of religious counseling in relation to the so-called new morality, this book provides a particularly clear and meaningful discussion that should be of calue to both the professional and the layman.
