Thomas, I have received paper takeout containers that have the same molded tray shape as foam containers. They are study and sauces don't leak through them. Maybe those will come to your town too.

I use them to wrap books in. I use them when I'm cooking to put the prep trash in. I sometimes carry food or other items to work in them. Sometimes you just need a bag to carry something in. I have several, but I generally don't have an overabundance. I rarely use cloth bags for shopping because I do use the plastic ones. They do end up in the landfill eventually.
