I have reread this book 10 or 12 times. Wonderful story that is connected loosely to "The Flame and the Flower" and "Shanna".

Somewhat predictable, but still a good story.
This was typical Woodiwiss. The writing was eloquent but bordered on verbose and flowery. The characters and plot were all very intriguing, but felt a bit flat. I felt as if Woodiwiss fell into a rut of "This is what romance novels look like." There was nothing exceptional about the book. I honestly envisioned a Hallmark made-for-television movie as I read this.
While the book was enjoyable, I only wish that Woodiwiss had used the aura of the time period more.

I couldn't finish this. The heroine was so unbelievable perfect that I found her unbelievably boring.
This is the first book I've read by this author. I found it to be quite good. The love story has a hero and heroine that make you want good things to happen for them.
I love Kathleen Woodiwiss, and her historical romance books!! This one is about a woman, Shemaine, who is wrongly accused of thievery, and is sent to America. In America a single father, Gage, purchases her, to take care of the house, and his son.

This is a great story of romance with enough suspense to keep things interesting. It was nice to see a story that lasted past the wedding, as many romance stories end at that point. I was impressed with the author and will be looking for more of her books now.

Excellent, excellent book! I couldn't put it down. I loved the characters and the plot.

I enjoyed the book and I was surprised because I normally don't read books by this author but had run out of reading material one night except for this book that I had put off reading for several months. It turned out to be a pretty good book. So it shows that you always can't choose a good book because of it's cover!

Mystery and romance-awesome read!
I have tried to read Kathleen E. Woodiwiss, but to no avail. However I know that there are plenty of die hard Woodiwiss fans out there so I'm happy to add to your collection.

I had never read anything by this author and was given this book as a gift and thought it was one of the best books I had read in a long time. It kept me turning the pages andreading late into the night....a good read
Petals on the River was a good book. It was a story about bad luck turned good. I found it captivating, wanted to keep reading it to see how each step played out. Our heroine was sent away on a slave ship for devious reasons. She is meant to serve 7 years as an indentured servant. Her trip across the ocean was trying. She is a beautiful young woman and the fowl ship crew is run by a selfish prostitute and a bully of a jailer. The jailer decides he wants our heroine for his self and the ship owners husband, both aboard, wants her for his mistress. She does survive that displeasure but the bully and the prostitute follow her off the ship and try to get rid of her. She is rescued by our hero who brings another enemy. The story does end up good tho and she is happy. She is also cleared of her charges. Good story.
