Peter Charles L'Enfant: Vision, Honor and Male Friendship in the Early American Republic
Peter Charles L'Enfant Vision Honor and Male Friendship in the Early American Republic Author:Kenneth R. Bowling For years I was puzzled by why Pierre Charles L'Enfant had used the name Peter Charles L'Enfant when he purchased a Washington, D.C., lot at the October 1791 sale. When I decided to find out why, my initial research quickly established the fact he stopped using the name soon after coming to the United Sates. Why he did so became one aspe... more »ct of a talk that I presented in April 2001 to the Friends of the University Libraries. I had realized by then, and in particularly after additional research, that L'Enfant gave far more to the early American republic that just the design of Washington, D.C., for which he had been resurrected as a Frenchman and apotheosized in the early twentieth century. Thus this book, an effort to which many people have contributed.
