This book, though historical, was outside of my comfort zone, yet still a gripping story that pulled me in and didn't let go. I loved the drama and adventure, though the fighting/gore/sacrifices aren't my thing so I did some skipping through those sections. I grew to enjoy Julian (running from his past), Cassia (fiercely protective mother), Alexander (such a sweet child), and many of the supporting characters. I had to keep reading to find out how God would reveal himself, what happened to queen/sorceress Hagiru, and what became of Petra itself. I am eagerly waiting for the author's next book, about the city of Pompeii, releasing on June 1.
