What a page turner!!!! It stated off a little slow but once you get into it you can't put it down!!!!! I understand why it was so controversial when it was first released. I highly recommend it to everyone!!!
Yikes. I can see why it was so scandalous when originally published. Desperate Housewives has nothing on Peyton Place and the small town gossip that follows the quiet scandals of the working class and those that lord over them. Once you get started, you won't want to put it down...and it's amazing how well it holds up fifty years after being written.
My mother loved this book and the TV show..

The scorching New England classic
We read this as a buddy read in my online book club, The Reading Cove.
PEYTON PLACE has lots of memorable scenes (along with some gross, unnecessary descriptions of the clap, LOL); but overall it's an engaging story about this small New England town in New Hampshire, and the scandalous things different residents have going on!
I can appreciate Grace Metalious' boldness in calling a spade a spade when this book was first published in 1956.
I found two of the main characters, Allison and Selena, both annoying. I liked Constance's and Tomas' relationship (except for one small, odd happening early on that never really went anywhere...), and Dr. Swain had to be my favorite character for his support of others whenever needed, and his upstanding nature.
Selena's mother Nellie was one of the craziest characters I've ever met! Such warped reasoning!
By the end, I did feel the story got a bit long-winded, and began to wear out its welcome for me, so I'm not really interested in the sequel; but I will watch the Lana Turner movie soon! In the end, I give it a solid B.
