Lainey Livingston has just been made a member of the Elite Hands of Justice, the world's premiere cadre of superheroes. Her work with the Red Knights and the Power Squad was impressive; her apprehension stats are above normal, and her great strength and ability to fly are equally remarkable. Robert Elliot, the Reincarnist. A magician who has lived multiple lifetimes, he's the smartest man in the worldand Lainey's last obstacle. He was personally responsible for seeing Pushstar wash out. But his eyes are the softest, kindest that Lainey has ever seen, and he's just the sort to knock her for a loop. Lesson 1: Romantic entanglements among crime fighters are super exploitable, and falling in love with a man who "can't die" is like waving a red flag at a bull. Especially not when the most fiendish plot ever is about to break over Megalopolis like a wave of fire.

The Reincarnist is capable of fantastical magic, and because he's lived many lifetimes (and been many very interesting people) he knows pretty much everything about the world and how the human race works. But this also has made him close off the outside world, and unable to get close to other people. Instead he's always stuck in a book or his work. Lainey is a good person who would put the world before herself in a heartbeat. Which is exactly what a superhero should do, but sometimes heroes have a hard time doing the right thing when someone they love is involved. All the other heroes have awesome super powers like super strength, fire power, magic, flying, and they add a lot personality to the story.
The banter between Lainey and Robert is great, and I love when he points out her flaws even though he secretly loves them. The attraction between the two is obvious, but they make us wait till the "end" before they act on it.
Let me just say how much I enjoyed this book! I've always loved the inner workings of superheroes, and getting inside the head of Lainey Livingston did not let me down. The characters in Phenomenal Girl 5 are original and exciting to read about, and the book definitely got better the further I got into the plot. The only slight problems I had with the story was that the ending felt a little rushed, and that the villains were a little underdeveloped. Other than that a really fun read for everyone. AJ Menden managed to suck me into the story, and I ended up staying up late way past my bedtime so I could finish. Definitely check this one out for an exciting look into the superhero world!
