Oh, my God! This was a wonderful read, a story of hope and kindness against a background of war. I kept wishing it would never end. I also wondered if I had read it decades before. But that was because I couldn't believe I had been so stupid, or so unlucky, not to. It was at times very sad as to what might have been, but other times is was joyful for what was happening.

But it didn't surprise me, as I've also read his "A Town Like Alice" many, many years ago and so enjoyed it. I'll have to check out his other novels.

Excellent story of an older Englishman on vacation in France when the Germans invade in WWII. Asked to take a couple's children back to England with him for the duration of the war, he ends up with more than he bargains for. Nevil Shute is one of my favorite authors, and I'm reading his books in order. He is that rare author who gets better with each book he writes.

This was a great story about an elderly English gentleman who ends up taking seven children back to England from France right after the Nazi invasion. I believe it is based on a true story.
