This was a very interesting piece of historical fiction. Taking place in the frontier of Pennsylvania in the 1830s, the book features midwife and natural healer, widow Martha Cade, as she tends to the health of the women of her village of Trinity, butts heads with the new, young doctor who looks down on the traditional methods she employs, and helps smooth the waters of discontent in her small village. Very well researched, well written and plotted from start to finish. This was such an enjoyable read that I hated to see it end. But I am now into the sequel, "Home to Trinity" and I am delighted to be able to spend more time in Trinity, Pennsylvania. This is a unique book that I strongly recommend to anyone who enjoys historical fiction.

This was such a great book. It has something for everyone, and seems to be built upon entire realistic events. It was such a fast read, I am kinda sad that it is done. I highly recommend it.

If you like to read historical type books, then this is a good one for you. I love to read about how things were in "olden times" and this book follows a midwife that works in a small town/area in the 1830's. I love how this book fleshes out the main character- not just her work, but her hopes, dreams, history, and family. There are many little side aspects to life in the town and it sets up an interest for the sequel, esp regarding what happens with her daughter. I can highly recommend this book.
