Another of my favorite medieval mystery series, this one featuring Oxford physician Matthew Bartholomew. This first book takes place during the Black Death of 1347/8 and chronicles very well the horror it must have been for a caring physician. There also are a couple of murders taking place and a lesser person would probably have written off the dead bodies as plague victims, yet Matthew cannot do so in good conscience. Excellently done book.

I love historical fiction. this book is so good on many levels and yet i cannot give it my full support of 5 stars.
set in England during the plague and at a college, there is much intrigue and many murders to go along with the deadly plague. at times the plot got confusing to me and i got frustrated.i will read the next one anyway LOL

I love this series and its first books sets up the characters very well and makes you wnat to read more. The mystery is not easy to figure out the solution even on the second reading, or I maybe I shouldn't get rid of my day job. The book transports you to 1300 century England with the descriptions of the smells, sights,, and sounds of the day. This is a great read for anyone liking historical mystery. Enjoy!

The first in the series and a good read though it was packed full of events. Political intrigue, ambition, the plague, a bit of romance and murder, of course. Enough going on in this story perhaps for two stories, but it was engaging and kept my interest.

I liked this and will be hunting down the rest of the series. Bartholomew and Michael are well-developed characters and Gregory captures medieval Cambridge aptly and without glamour. The plot was intricate and the mystery kept me guessing right to the end.
