An intriguing story of an Amish community caught up in an "English" trial. Picoult has a way with character development, and this is no exception. You quickly begin to care about these people, and I found myself looking forward to some reading time in order to lose myself in the calm and "plain" life they lead. It's a deeply moving plot, and beautifully crafted.

I absolutely could not stop reading this book - I loved the characters, the story, and the ending. And I loved how I missed all the important clues that led up to the ending - they were there, but wonderfully subtle. I hate when I figure out the twist halfway through, and this book absolutely shocked me. A wonderful novel. I'd give it six stars if that were an option :-)

Ok, I have to go against the grain here. As I did like this book (it's my 4th Piccoult) I felt it was repetitive and somewhat dragged out. The plot just seemed reiterated and recycled. I did find the insight into the Amish life and community to be of interest, but the storyline seemed anti-climactic, even with the twist (maybe because I had it nailed by mid-novel). My first Piccoult was My Sister's Keeper, and none have compared to that one in my opinion...I also feel her style is predicatble after a while.

This is a great book with many twists and turns. The author also provides an insight into the Amish community and what it isn't, which was a blessing to me. I have read other books based on the Amish people, but this one seems to go a little deeper. The characters are varied and deeply developed, which made me feel as if I knew them. The ending was a bit of a surprise, and I also felt it wasn't a strong ending or one I walked away from feeling satisfied. Other than that, I loved the book!

This was my second Jodi Picoult book and I must say I liked it much better than Picture Perfect. She was able to capture the Amish way so perfectly, and the book had that courtroom thrill that I didn't expect with her style of writing.

Fabulous, heart-warming. I was amazed at the character development and how the story pulled me in. I literally got nothing done for two days because I just had to see how it turned out - it was just amazing.

"Plain Truth" is a well-written story of the mystery surrounding the birth and almost immediate death of a baby in the barn of an Amish farm. It is a fascinating story as the reader accompanies the Philadelphia lawyer chosen to defend the young mother accused of killing her own baby...Complete with a surprise ending, this book is a compelling read which you will find difficult to put down once started. Another winner from Jodi Piccoult!

One of Picoults best - a captivating look at Amish life when it collides with the lives of "The English." Each character is multi-dimensional. Every part of the book carries you along, from Amish services, to court, to life in a big city. After reading a couple so-so books by her, I was very pleased I spent my time reading this one.

Amazing. I just finished this book and immediatley went to paperbackswap to order my next Jodi Picoult book. I have also read "Vanishing Acts" and "The Tenth Circle", both of which blew me away. Plain truth is such a surprise. It keeps you guessing until the very end. I literally could not put the book down and I was sad when it was over. This is a MUST read. You will be so amazed by what you learn about the Amish. You play the detective in this story, you may think you know what happened, but the end will take you full circle. It's incredible.

Of all of her books that I have re-read, I remembered this book the best so far. If I knew the twist at the end the first time I read it, I do not recall... Nonetheless, this, too, is a good book. I've always liked to read about the Amish and this book tells a convincing story.
It's not one of my favorites, but it's a solid book. It, too, follows her court-room drama and twist at the end. It was also made into a Lifetime movie (see if you can spot Jodi Picoult and her family's cameo appearance).

Very good story. I definitely could have done without the language and sexual content, but the story was so compelling I still couldn't put it down. I would much rather prefer the Christian based Amish fiction though for the clean content of the story.

This is one of her best books yet. I am never disappointed by any of her novels, but this was extraordinary. The ending, as several of the reviews before me stated, was a complete surprise. I have read several fictional Amish novels by Christian authors; Jodi Picoult obviously did her research also when writing about the Plain people.

This book pulls you in but it is very slow to grab you. After reading 100 pages you start to get involved in the story and want to find out what happens next. I was against the girl from the beginning. I was becoming disappointed knowing that the main characters always prevail and I did not want to see this one prevail. By the end of the book, I was more open to the girl and was OK with her outcome. There are some parts that are predictable but they do not ruin the ending. It was a window into the Amish life. This is a book that once you finish it, you need to digest before starting a new one.

I loved this book. This is only the second Jodi Picoult book that I've read and it won't be the last. I found the subject matter very interesting since I don't know much about the Amish way of life. I read this book very quickly because I was dying to find out what happened. Picoult creates great characters here and you sympathize with them even though the crime is a heinous one. I highly recommend this one.

This story revolves around an Amish teen who is accused of giving birth to a baby boy out of wedlock and then smothering him. As the story unfolds, it becomes more riveting, as her friends, family, lawyer, prosecution, doctors, psychiatrists, and even she herself try to figure out exactly what happened that morning. The result is a fascinating but sad story with a bit of a surprise twist at the end.

I LOVED this book! You probably know Jodi Picoult as the author of My Sisters Keeper. It was the first of her books that I read and I was hesitant to read any others because I thought they would never live up to My Sisters Keeper. With that book I couldnt stop reading because of all the emotional drama and cried my eyes out. With this one I couldnt stop reading because I was enthralled with learning more about the Amish culture and I just had to figure out the truth!

Her client is determined to be the infants mother and the investigators say the child was not a stillborn and was most likely smothered to death. But as you learn more and more about the Amish beliefs and values the more impossible it seems that an Amish girl would be capable of doing something like that. So what is the truth?
Ellie, the big city attorney, doesnt even want to take on the case at first and ends up having to move in with the Fisher family as part of Katies bail agreement. After you have read 2 of Picoult's novels, you realized there's a pattern and you know there will be a trial and a bit of a twist at the end. This one follows that formula right along. What I liked most about this book is all the detail she gave into the Amish life, she did an excellent research job! I hated the ending, I was surprised she left it for the very last few pages, usually she does a better job of rounding out the ending of the book. I'm still left wondering about HOW it happened, but I guess my imagination will have to run wild with it.

I am a big Jodi Picoult fan and as with all of her books, this was well written. I really enjoyed learning about the Amish and the author clearly did her research. However, I felt like the book wrapped up a little too quickly and cleanly. I found myself wanting an epilogue... Nevertheless, it was a great suspense!

This book is about the fact that a newborn baby is found dead in Amish barn in Lancaster County, PA and a young Amish woman is accused of the crime. It is a great read and I would highly recommend it. This author doesn't usually write Amish fiction but I think she did a great job and I would to see her do another one.

This is the first book I read of Jodi Picoult and I really enjoy her writing now. A great book that gives you a look inside the lives of the Amish Community and their way of life, but also looks at the other side of things and though they have different beliefs and ways, they are still capable of the same faults and tragedies others are. A definite mystery that keeps you reading and guessing to the very end.

WOW! What a great story! This book had me by the heart by the first page and never let go. Since I live near several Amish communities, maybe I was more interested in the subject matter than you will be, but this is a gripping tale. I learned some things about the "Plain" folk. This book is about a test of faith, love and family traditions. A young Amish girl is accused of murder of her newborn infant and the story examines her religious beliefs and the temptations of modern society. The climax is her trial, defense and shocking verdict. I couldn't put this one down!

This book was UNBELIEVABLY GOOD!! I could not put this book down. This was my first Jodi Picoult book and I was hooked. She is a fabulous writer and does not pad it with extra "fluff". Everything she writes leaves you hanging on every word. It was an amazing story and kept you intrigued from the first sentence!

This is the first Jodi Picoult book that I have read. I am really not interested in the Amish culture, but it is a book club selection. I found the story and the characters quite interesting. I actually had a hard time putting it down. The story flowed and kept me tied to it. However, the basis of the story seemed to me to be contrived. The fact that an 'English' attorney would be allowed to go and live in an Amish household and become a part of the family was hard to get my mind around. I cannot believe that this could have actually happened even though this attorney was a distant relative. This was the main reason I couldn't give it four stars. Maybe, I should have given it five stars for convincing me that it could have actually happened. I certainly got hooked on the story.
Although Jodi Picoult's books are easy, good reads, I'm finding that the "twisty" endings are good but getting far too predictable. This ending I guessed not even a chapter in... still a pageturner however and fans of her work will love this book.

I found this book very interesting for the insider's look at the Amish society in Pennsylvania. A young, unmarried, Amish girl has a baby which is found dead, and an attorney who is visiting the area is pressed into trying to untangle the murder.
I enjoyed this book until the courtroom scenes when it seemed to bog down. I have to admit though I couldn't really understand what motivated some of the characters to act as they did. I was really disappointed in the ending but was not surprised by it.

I probably would have never read this book had it not been chosen by my book club. I had read only one other book of ms. picoult's and that was "my sister's keeper" which was full of so much emotion and after reading it I was so sad and disturbed that I didn't want to read any more books by this author, although she is a fantastic writer. This book was not like that at all, the writing was once again fantastic and I was definitely drawn into the story itself, but it was a lot easier for my emotions to handle.lol It was very interesting reading about the amish world, it kept me wanting to learn more. I wasn't suprised too much by the ending but I do feel like there were some unanswered questions for me. All in all this was a great story and I would recommend this book for others to read.
Not for Christian readers! Disappointing amounts of smut, completely objectifying of the female. Why was this necessary? Sex sells I guess. JP mentions the "small of the back" about 13 times. Ok, we get it, you're a back person. Other phrases are also way overused; I feel like JP is losing her touch as an intelligent author - the cliches were plentiful. Maybe this book was intended as a filler for her repertoire, or a dime-store paperback?

Excellent! As usual, Ms. Picoult provides descriptive and captivating chapters to keep you from putting the book down! Developed each character so well and the story line has enough mystery to keep you in suspense. There are twists and turns -- a real page turner to the very, very end. If you have read alot of Jodi's work I would think that you will figure this one out WAY before it ends... or if you have seen the movie. I liked it and enjoyed the few hours it killed to read it! But not a big one on my list of MUST reads.
Awesome book. She does very well switching back and forth chapter to chapter to different problems happening at the same time. Keeps the reader wondering what is going to happen next. Another twisted ending!

I have been a quilter for 30 years. Most of what was written about quiltmaking in this novel was so totally erroneous that it made me question the accuracy of the depiction of Amish life that was central to the story. Ms. Picoult is a very popular writer, but better research on the details would improve the realism of her books. This book also has a twist at the end that didn't ring true to me. So even though multitudes seem to like her work I won't be reading any more of it.

As always, Picoult, has written a very insightful book. Her characters are well defined and show all the strengths and frailties of people living ordinary lives but experiencing extraordinary events. I am an avid reader of Amish stories, but, of course, "Plain Truth" shows the underside of these unusual people. The story of Katie Fisher, an 18 year old Amish girl involved in an unsolved murder case and her defense lawyer, Ellie Hathaway, a disillusioned big city lawyer make for an intriguing read of the clash between two vastly different cultures.

Jodi Picoult writes of controversal topics that show us more than one side of the subject and gives you a twist at the end that you don't expect.
This was the first Jodi Picoult book I read and it kept me enthralled till the very last page. AMAZING BOOK! I immediately started wanting to read more of her work!

The tension she creates between the strict, traditional Amish values and modern American culture is really captivating. It's a pretty easy read, and the ending will have you slapping your head saying "Why didn't I see that earlier!" A great read, I highly recommend it

This is my first book by Jodi Picoult. You can tell a lot of research was done before writing this book. Wonderful, true-to-life characters that you knew just exacting how they felt. There were some surprises, too. Highly recommend.

Wonderful book, with a suprise ending. A great book learning about personal and family values. I have read several books by Picoult and this tops the list!
I figured out the end too quickly. Didn't love it, pretty much finished it just because I started it and it was the only thing around. Little disappointing.

For many of Picoult's books it seemed to me her subject matter differed dramatically from one book to the next. While she's not written of the Amish before, it has finally become apparent to me her consistent theme - family and relationships in the most difficult of circumstances. In this story, an Amish girl becomes pregnant, delivers alone in a barn, and the newborn ends up dead. Compelling.
I love all her books, this is a good story.

this was the 3rd Picoult novel i read and like the first 2, (My Sister's Keeper and THe Pact) I was HOOKED and could not put it down! It helps that I live 30 minutes from where the story was set! :)

Jodi Picoult tells another good story. This is my favorite one from this author. About an Amish girl & a dead baby.... you don't know who is the baby's father or who killed the baby until the very end. Be prepared to have the rug pulled out from under you!!!

I like this author because her books well written and easy to read. I like that each book has a focus on a different culture or specific subject matter, so it's a learning experience as well. The only thing that has become tiresome is that I didn't realized that all of her books are "legal" books, meaning the story always has something to do with a legal problem and the process through the court system/prison system.
