Simultaneously interesting and disappointing. Auel has thought of an original storyline but doesn't seem to put as much effort into the sequels as she did the first. The storyline is generally repetitive, which makes it tedious to read until something interesting happens - and it does, eventually. If you are fond of romances, or don't have the time to finish a book quickly, you may find the repetition enjoyable or helpful. You certainly won't get lost if you decide to begin in the middle of the series.
This is one of my favorite series and this book is just wonderful! Although, even after reading it a 2nd time and more than ten years later, I still find Jondalar a whiner and he can really annoy me. However, Ayla is such an amazing heroine that it makes it all worth it!
