I've long been a Muller fan and I'll admit to some hesitation about what began as a stand-alone but has had a few other books tied in (Cyanide Wells being an excellent example). This was a good book, a strong book, but to be honest, Cyanide Wells is better.
Still, this gives you a good background into the fictional Cascada Canyon and the (also fictional) area in which these books are set. I'd call it a don't miss, not a must-not-miss.

This is one of the more intriguing books, with possibly too much subterfuge, that I\'ve read in some time. I recommend it to any mystery buff!
the young woman stranded on the coastal highway was pretty in a way that spelled trouble. A few days later Rhoda Swift, sheriff's deputy in California's Soledad County, regrets she didn't stop to help her..for the girl's murdered body washes in with the tide near Point Deception-- a spot haunted by the unsolved massacre of two families from thirteen years ago. Now the community's fears are suddenly resurrected with a vengeance. And when Rhoda investigates the crime with Guy Newberry, a New York journalist with dark secrets of his own, a shocking truth will test how far she is willing to go for justice.
This is by far the best book this author has written! Its not one of the Sharon McCone series. I have read two of the books shes authored with her husband, Bill Pronzini, and loved them. I felt they were better than the Sharon McCone series, too. But this book exceeds their status in my opinion.
very good, a stand alone not one of Muller's regular series.
Good murder mystery - old mystery intwined with a new one. Interesting people, good read.
A journalist and a local sheriff unite in an uneasy alliance when a serial killer attacks a quiet town still shadowed by an unsolved mass murder thirteen years earlier.

Marcia Muller departs from her long-running Sharon McCone series to introduce Rhoda Swift, a deputy sheriff in Soledad County, California in this novel. Rho's an engaging character, and and always, Muller knows how to write a tight mystery.
I always enjoy her books.

This was a pretty good book. I liked the two main characters. However, I had trouble keeping up with all the other people because there were so many that I thought I should keep a list. Also, there were so many people committing crimes in this book that I did not figure who committed the actual murders. But by the end of the book, it did not seem to matter to me.
"... in a major departure from [Muller's] critically acclaimed series, she introduces us to a new heroine, one who wears a badge and a gun, in a dark, edgy thriller that is complex and relentlessly chilling."
Nice quick mystery. A good feel for the environment as a character.
Very good book, finished it in one night. I was actually looking for a different author and requested this one thinking it was by Marcia Mueller, but I enjoyed this one just as much if not more.
