Exciting book! It is (as usual) better than the movie. My husband read the book when it was first released years back and enjoyed it the second time around after watching the movie.

Retired Marine sniper Bob Lee Swagger is enticed back into the field unaware until it's too late that the game is rigged.
As a former sniper for a government agency, I can say that Point of Impact is a very exciting book that is true to the principles of shooting. Hunter takes his writing seriously, and his research is meticulous. If you are familiar with the movie, SHOOTER, starring Mark Walhberg, it is based upon this book. There are differences, but minor. I loved both the movie and the book. I read the book in three days (had things that HAD to be done, or it would have been a one-day read). I thoroughly recommend this book to all.

Bob Lee Swagger was the best sniper in Vietnam and almost 20 yrs later, he lives as a recluse in the Arkansas mountains with his dog, bothering no one, and just enjoying his guns. When he's approached by a couple of men who try to recruit his "help" in stopping an alleged assassination plot against the president of the United States, his senses rise and he knows everything isn't copacetic. This book leads the reader through several twists and turns along the way, with an even bigger shocking ending. I loved this book and Bob Lee Swagger. They're calling this Book #1, but I'm not sure how Book #2 could come about with the way it ends. A reader can only hope, though!
Excellent read. If you like the book, you will probably like the movie based on the book "Shooter". And vice versa.
I love this book.
This excellent book was made into the movie "Shooter" in 2007 starring Mark Wahlberg.
This is a awsome book, very, very good.It move very smothy, keeps you truning the page and the ending will leaving you with a great story that you will want other pepole to read so you can share the story with.I have not seen the movie, but I do know that is you like a good who done it this is a good book!!!!!

WOW! Best action fiction I've read in ages. Brought back a lot of memories. Well written with good detail.
He was one of the best Marine snipers in Vietnam. Today, twenty years later, disgruntled hero of an unheroic war, all Bob Lee Swagger wants is to be left alone and to the killing behind.
But with consummate psychological skill. a shadowy military organization seduces Bob into leaving his beloved Arkansas hills for one last mission for his country, unaware until too late that the game is rigged.
The assassination plot is executed to perfection--until Bob Lee Swagger, alleged lone gunman, comes out out of the operation alive, the target of a nationwide manhunt, his only allies a woman he has just met and a discredited FBI agent.
Now Bob Swagger is on the run, using his lethal skills once more--but this time to track down the men who set him up and to break a dark conspiracy aimed at the very heart of America.
Personal: this is one scary story that grabs you and won't let go until the end. And even after the endiing it is hard to leave the story & shivers behind!

WAY good read, intricate, mesmerizing, detailed and suspenseful!!! MUCH better then the movie. Loved it and hope someone else will have as much enjoyment out of reading it as I did. Not a meek mamby pamby book, not some same old same old summer romance, but a life or death story line with captivating cast of characters that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat.
Great conspiracy story!
The tension never lets up. Steven Hunter has done for the rifle what Tom Clancy did for the nuclear submarine.
Great adventure novel about a Rambo type character who lives a secluded life in the hills of Arkansas. Swagger is an ex Marine niper who is drawn into a huge power play by a group of conspirators. Really kept me hopping trying to figure what was coming next.
Hunter at his best!
Way too long, too much unnecessary description. The characters were like caricatures of villains and cops. The basic story is good and I finished the book to find out the ending but I skipped over large sections.
Excellent fast-paced action novel from Stephen Hunter. This is the first Bob Lee Swagger novel and it is probably the best! However, I really love all of the Swagger series - both Bob Lee and Earl Swagger. I would recommend reading this book, then "Dirty White Boys" (not a Swagger novel, but some of the same characters appear in other books), and then "Black Light" which ties "Point of Impact" and "Dirty White Boys" together and is a great intro to the Earl Swagger novels. Hunter is super!!
A psychological thriller about a Vietnam veteran and the FBI using his lethal skills within a conspiracy within.

MUCH MUCH BETTER THAN THE MOVIE!! If you liked the movie, you'll LOVE the book. The movie left out much of Hunter's plot.
The 1st Bob Lee "The Nailer" Swagger book. The untimate sniper book.
Wow, what a ride! I borrowed this from my local library, finished it in one day, then went back and got the rest of the books on the shelf. Consider me a new hardcore fan of Stephen Hunter.

This is the first book in the Bobby Lee Swagger series. Both my husband and I like this 4.5* series and once we read #3, decided to get the others. The details of guns may be a bit tedious for those who know and care nothing about guns; however, the story line can keep everyone interested.
