The Police by Jo Nesbo

Nesbo may be the best police procedural mystery writer out there now. His Norwegian detective Harry Hole fits the classic mold of the gritty, tough as nails, but in end, always heroic lead. In this 10th novel in the series, Harry is back in Norway. I'm not giving much away in saying Harry does not die at the end of book 9 The Phantom or there won't be a book 10. Not only does Hole not die, he is actually doing better than he has in the last half-dozen books. He is sober, teaching, and in a mostly-stable relationship with his life-long love. But there are still serial killers out there, this time killing police officers and friends of Harry. Reluctantly, he is drawn back into the hunt while dealing with his own worst-instincts and self-destructive tendencies. It is well worth readers time to see how and if Harry and keep skates over pending disaster. Nesbo is the master of the big plot twist and he has an amazing ability to always make you wonder who's in danger next. It's a gripping read well recommended.
