Anna knew her family believed in and practiced polygamy. However she did not realize that her father, who she only saw 3 times in her life, was the leader of a religious church which was really a cult that advocated blood atonement. She lived in a life of poverty and was moved often to outrun the authorities who were search for Ervil LeBaron and his followers for murder and other crimes. When she left the group at age 13 she was lucky enough to have a sister who took her in. She still had a very hard life and the work she was given to do was dirty, hard and tiresome.
Although not about the FLDS, the book has many similarities. Hard to read at times but Anna had and still has a resilient spirit.
