When Amaryllis Duvane's father died, she lost her dowry. She was engaged to the Marquess of Merechester, and she loved him. But he needed to marry money, so she felt the honorable thing to do was to let him out of the engagement. Apparently, she was unaware that he was in love with her too. She went to live as a poor relation with the Warburtons. Years later, he comes to court one of the pretty Warburton girls, and meets his old fiancee. Even though he tries, he can't seem to resist her, but he will if Lady Warburton (who wants him for her oldest daughter) has anything to say to it. I like my heroines to show more spirit than Amaryllis did in this book, and IMHO it lacked passion. Also, her reluctance to see ( which was pretty obvious in my opinion) that he loved her, was irritating. Also, the spoiled Warburton girls could be annoying at times as well.
