The book started out a bit light and slow, in my opinion, but it did give us a feel for who the characters are in the story. Sometimes I felt that a little too much drama happens to the lead character all at one time, but it did make for a good story.

It was also fascinating reading a book written about a time before DNA was as well-developed as it is today in forensic science.

You're also kept guessing until the end who the killer is, but I was still surprised at who it was in the end. I'm a bit hooked now on these books and plan to continue reading more of the series since I have quite a few of them on my TBR shelf.

To date my favorite book of Cornwell's series of forensic novels and her first. "A serial killer is on the loose in Richmond Virginia, three women have died...there is no pattern and the killer appears to strike at random..."

"An excellent chiller with pace and tension"--Sunday Telegraph

First in the series and a wonderful beginning--Kay is business-like but not so harsh as to be a harpie. A plot with just enough twists that I never thought I was being "talked-down to". This was my first Cornwell, and I don't intend for it to be my last.

Well, now I know why this one won the Edgar for best first novel and why Cornwell has cranked out a new Kay Scarpetta novel almost every year for the last 15 years or so. Her loyal and devoted following is well-earned, and I'm looking forward to reading more of the Dr. Scarpetta series. If you like CSI or any of the other forensic shows that dominate TV nowadays, you will love this series.

Patricia Corwell's series starring Kay Scarpetta as the Chief Medical Examiner is one of the best series of books I have read. Mysteries have never been my genre, but I love the CSI TV series and this book intrigues me in the same manner. Corwell is very knowledgeable and her writing style is descriptive and flowing as well as easy to read. Its not so packed with technical jargon that you cant sit and enjoy a nice quiet read without having to reach for a dictioary.

The first time I heard about Patricia Cornwell's Kay Scarpetta mysteries was on BBC World Book Club and when the hefty tome containing the first three Scarpetta novels caught my eye at the used book shop I immediately snatched it off the shelf. It waited its turn until this year when I finally settled in to read Postmortem.
One of the first things that struck me, even distracted me somewhat, was how much technology playing a major part in the story dated the novel. Scarpetta talked about diskettes, bringing up information through Basic commands, dialing in to computers via modem and I could hardly believe the time Cornwell was writing about was just over 20 years ago. Seems like much longer considering the leaps and bounds by which technology has advanced since 1990s.
Once I adjusted to the idea of computer systems being a novelty and DNA testing being so new that it was barely used and took forever I was able to appreciate this book for what it is. Did you know it received the Edgar, Creasey, Anthony and Macavity Awards and the French Prix du Roman d'Adventure in a single year? It was revolutionary back then to put a woman in the center of a crime novel and Cornwell did it wonderfully. Kay Scarpetta is intelligent and strong, but at the same time she's vulnerable and sensitive. We see her as the tough Chief Medical Examiner and a loving aunt who makes pizza from scratch, we see her doing her best and feeling insecure because she's one of the few women in a man-dominated world. Things have changed some since then but not all that much and it was refreshing to see a woman who isn't all iron lady.
The supporting cast complemented Scarpetta nicely - a rough around the edges detective with both great instincts and integrity to bring to the table, a little girl so smart she beat the adults at their own game, the perfect suspect or two who... well, I'll leave you to figure that one out on your own.
The characters really made the book for me but the writing was great as well. This is one of those cases where the writer breaks the rules we've heard time and time again (limit adverbs, show don't tell, etc.) and does it in a way that works and actually makes the novel better. As they say, break the rules the right way!
Last but not least when it came time for the big reveal I was just as suprised as everyone else. Cornwell revealed the clues so gradually that I actually felt like I was figuring things out with Scarpetta and Marino and the fact that there wasn't a big explanation at the end and neither was the culprit one of the characters who already made an appearance at the scene made the story much more satisfying. Needless to say I look forward to reading the next book in the volume.

The first Kay Scarpetta draws you into a world that is definitely NOT cozy, but is so very realistic you can almost smell the institutional paint mixed with disinfectant and blood. There is no gore for the sake of sensationalism however--the story is very tightly constructed.

After having this author recommended to me several times by friends, I purchased Patricia Cornwell's entire Kay Scarpetta series on Ebay. This is the first book in the series, and although I highly enjoyed it, I was a bit disappointed in the ending--mostly, I think, because I was expecting the serial killer to be a major character of the book. Now that I know Cornwell's books are like that, I will not be disappointed in future reads.

Postmortem is a tale of a serial killer who preys upon women. His victims seem to have nothing in common, therefore baffling all who are attempting to profile and/or catch him. Chief Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta is a brilliant heroine, and one to be admired. I would definitely recommend reading this book first as it introduces characters to appear in later books of the Kay Scarpetta series.

victorianvalkyrie avatar reviewed Postmortem (Kay Scarpetta, Bk 1) on
Postmortem is a book that's made to plague your mind with vivid detail about bondage and what plagues the minds of people that have to deal with it--not only in being raped and/or bound but in those that have to find the person who forcibly did it. For a starter novel it's very well done though there are some points that had me stopping to reread a few times. Like any book there are mistakes but some of them are in spots that not only should the author have found but the editor as well. As for character basics Cornwell did a good enough job with slipping in details about Scarpetta's past but the other characters have a few problems. Mainly Bolts. She speaks about him in a way that we should know all of this as she does but doesn't explain things in between. He makes drastic character changes--which is difficult to follow since in the beginning of the book, toward the middle, he's constantly important to Scarpetta but then suddenly he leaves and is barely mentioned again until the end of the book which isn't very logical since he was a suspect.

All in all I do enjoy the book, I sat down one morning with some tea and nothing to do. That night I found myself closing the book with mild satisfaction. She did a well enough job that it is a page turner but I believe it would be even better if it was polished up a bit more.

Chief Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta investigates a series of murders in the Richmond area. Four women have been viciously murdered. Forensics show that they were killed by the same person. Dr. Scarpetta works with Detective Pete Marino and FBI Special Agent Benton Wesley to catch a serial killer.

This is Patricia Cornwell's debut novel. It's a solid story which is heavy on forensics. I thought the long conversations about blood types and DNA slowed down the story. There wasn't much action until the end when the identity of the killer was uncovered. It's the first book in the Kay Scarpetta series and a must if you wish to read more in the series. My rating: 4 Stars.

Story jumped all over. First this was the guy and then no that was the guy. Then at the end, low and behold, it was someone who never appeared in the story at all. Came out of nowhere.

That's not a mystery. The mystery is in the discovering who done it by following all the clues. Not here are all the facts and whoops, no, this person from nowhere did it.

Phooey.

I will try some other Scarpetta books and see if they are any better. Maybe the first one was just trying to write one and falling short.

Under cover of night in Richmond, Virginia, a human monster strikes, leaving a gruesome trail of stranglings that has paralyzed the city. Medical examiner Kay Scarpetta suspects the worst: a deliberate campaign by a brilliant serial killer whose signature offers precious few clues. With an unerring eye, she calls on the latest advances in forensic research to unmask the madman. But this investigation will test Kay like no other, because it's being sabotaged from within and someone wants her dead.

Kay is trying to solve the crime, but someone within is causing problems. This is the first in the series for Patricia Cornwell. Great book, and you don't have to read this series in order to enjoy them.

I started this series because I will soon need something to take the place of JD Robb's Eve Dallas series. I'm not sure this will suffice. The story was ok, and the narration (from the audio book) was ok. It just didn't suck me in and excite me the way other books do. Plus, there were a bunch of 'date stamps' throughout the story. I know it was written a while ago, but it still bugged me to hear about watching a VHS, or the modem for an intranet connection and the constant chain smoking of almost every character. I suppose I was thinking that such a popular series would have been edited and updated by now.

Overall, it's an ok read, but Kay Scarpetta is no Eve Dallas!

Patricia Cornwell, is not only a great author who works magic with her words, but a wonderful, charming and intelligent person. In "Postmortem", forensic scientist Kay Scarpetta uses her forensic talent to find leads to the sadist kidnapper. Recommend to anyone.

Patricia Cornwell is a great author... or so I've been told. I have read several of her books and I just don't think they are that great. However, Many other people like her and she's selling more books than I am, so I don't feel I have room to complain.

I didn't finish this book. I'm tired of how angry and unpleasant these characters have become. I'm also tired of books that want to take me into the author's idea of a psychotic mind. The early books are very good, but I'm through with this author.

I honestly can't say how I liked this book. My late husband loved the Kay Scarpetta novels but I found them a little gruesome. This one concerns "Mr. Nobody", a serial killer apparently.
