I love this series. It is a medieval mystery that is entertaining, quick to read and somewhat educational on the subjects of Abbey life and the political situation in England/wales in 1143. I would recommend The Brother Cadfael books to those who enjoy "cozy" mysteries.

#17 of this wonderful Brother Cadfael 12th century Welsh Borderlands series of not necessarily monastic mysteries.

I feel that this is one of the best in a wonderfully good series of medieval mysteries.
When a man leaves his wife to join a monastery she supposedly finds a lover and runs away with him. However her body is later found in a freshly plowed field. The mystery builds from there, and Brother Cadfael is called in to help solve it.

A decent Cadfael wherein the body found in a field reveals mystery and secrets from long before.

Two women of similar appearance are presumed dead. Yet evidence is provided that show both are still alive. So why is there a body? Who is lying and why?

An older woman is dying of a wasting disease. Hugh is called off to war. A novice monk asks release from the church. A young woman seeks love and provides Cadfael a clue that allows him to solve a mystery. So many inter-winding plot threads make this yet another wonderful mystery from Ellis Peters.

17TH BROTHER CADFAEL CHRONICLE

This book is one of the series where I didn't guess the perpetrator early on. Generally no matter how old a book is, I try to avoid spoilers, but I don't think it's a spoiler here to say there is no murder. It's perhaps a more reflective book than some of the others, but still has the same comforting Brother Cadfael, the wrongly accused, and the young lovers.
