NPR's Scott Simon writes, through the lens of his own experiences in Sarajevo, a compelling novel about a high school girl, a Muslim, a star basketball player, who is caught up in the horrors of ethnic cleansing and becomes a sniper for the opposition.
intense look at the siege of sarajevo through the eyes of a teenage female sniper. well-written. scott simon was there as a reporter and it shows in this fiction work.
This was a harrowing tale of the siege of Sarajevo as seen through the eyes of Irena Zaric who was a Muslim high school basketball star before the start of the war. The story just seemed so futile by the end. Perhaps that is what Scott Simon wanted to illustrate, but I think he did it with a pretty heavy hand.
I listened to this as an audiobook and loved it. Had to get it to read over.
Wow. This is awesome. I did not know much about this conflict, and in 350 well written pages I know a lot and probably more than I wanted to. One of the best books I have read in a long time.
