McFarland is one of my favorite authors and I have enjoyed every one of his novels.
Prince Edward, his latest one, I felt was by far his best. Prince Edward County was one of the counties in the south that resisted the integration of the public schools. Against this angry and painful background, the story narrated by a 10 year old boy living in these puzzling times, manages to tell the story with grace and humor. The prose is smooth as butter, and the human stories of the family in the novel come through as real and true as any I have ever read. A fantastic read.

Well written and informative. Like To Kill a Mockingbird, (one of my all time favorite books), our protagonist is a child, and often unaware of the import of the actions he is reporting.
I grew up with a stepfather who reminds me of one of the characters (the grandfather), and I can say that the author got it so right that some of the reading was uncomfortable for me and I contemplated quitting the book because it brought back some very unpleasant memories. But I pressed on, and I am glad I did. Serious themes, here, but over all an engaging story.
