Although this is a "Teen" book, I would recommend it to anyone. It is adorable, light and funny. What an average teenager goes through in everyday life, then add the fact that she suddenly discovers she is a princess of a small European principality. A well written, heartwarming, quick read.

As a fan of the movies, I must say I was a bit disappointed with this book. I can understand the changes that were made, but yeah. On its own though, the book was a fun one and it shows great promise for an ongoing tale.

Mia Thermopolis feels ugly because of her height, large feet, flat chest, and triangle hair. She is un-popular, and boyfriendless -- and, to her suprise, the Princess of Genovia. Her never married parents had kept is royality a secret from her for fourteen years. But Mia isn't exactly happy. It's hard to be a princess in a highschool in New York, especially when your Mom is dating your Algebra teacher and you have a low self esteem and your "evil" Grandmere gives you princess lessons every day. But Mia is strong, and she knows she can pull through everything with a diary to confess EVERYTHING to.
Although this book doesn't exactly challenge one's thinking, it is a must read for every highschool girl (and older if you enjoy this genre of book). Meg Cabot's strinking sense of humor combined with a seemingly random yet well planned story line will make the reader laugh out loud. You will be demanding Book 2 as soon as you finish with the first.

I didn't really like this book. I was expecting it to be a lot more like the movie that I absolutely love, but I couldn't seem to get past the first couple of 'chapters' as they were written as diary entries(though I probably should have gotten that from the title...).
