Instead of posting this book, I threw it away. Many books by Ridley Pearson are interesting, even riveting. But Probable Cause started out with a woman's throat being cut and a child being knocked into a brain-dead state. Then a dog was found hung. Then a cat was tortured and killed. Much too much violence described in detail by an author who knows how to write. Why waste precious time reading material like this?

I ordered this book for a 85 year old friend of mine. She said he enjoyed it and would recommend it to others.

The mayor wants to keep things quiet although a series of 'accidental' deaths are nothing but. Detective Dewitt won't quit seeking answers in this convoluted tightly paced thriller.

Shattered by a mindless act of violence that changed his life forever, James Dewitt decided to become a cop. Shackled by a web of red tape and corruption, Dewitt now fights desperately to solve a string of murders cleverly staged to look like suicides. Submerged in the deranged world of the psychopathic mind, Dewitt struggles to outwit the killer, the man they call the trapper, before it's too late . . . and to use every fingerprint and every fiber--and every last ounce of his strength--to escape the ultimate evil.

In Carmel-by-the-sea, Calif., Detective James Dewitt, a former forensic investigator, comes across a couple of suicides in as many days. He and forensics aide Clare O'Daly suspect murder and focus on a bent policeman. When the cop dies, asphyxiated in his car like the first victims, Dewitt steps up his investigation, working his way through a varied cast--a rich assemblywoman, a petty thief, a sexy female lawyer, a spoiled rich kid, a jailed serial killer, a vengeful psychotic.

A good murder mystery, a chain of murders set to look like suicide and James Dewitt tackles this as well as red tape and curruption in the investigation.

Ridley Pearson is always good. Interesting characters that you come to care about, and facinating plots, with satisfying, surprising endings. Moves fast - you won't be able to put it down. A cop tries to solve a series of murders staged as suicides, and tries to outwit a killer.
