I found Harlan Coben just last year and have read every single book he has on the market. I love his writing and the way he builds his characters. It is an absolute pleasure to read his books in order and see their progression.
originally I thought the sports aspect would be a turn-off for me, but it has so little to do with the story that it didn't bother me at all.
If you're looking for a quick, good, fun read, this is the book for you.

First time I've read one of his books, and I was NOT disappointed! Intrigue, suspense, and good twists. Apparently there are a series of books involving the main character, Myron Bolitar. Can't wait to order more.

*Starred Review* Coben, the reigning master of clockwork suspense, and winner of the trifecta of mystery-writing honors--the Edgar, the Agatha, and the Shamus--produces a fascinating hybrid thriller here. Coben began his career writing detective novels starring Myron Bolitar, an ex-Celtics basketball player turned entertainment agent. For the past six years, he has concentrated on stand-alone thrillers. Coben's novels are noted for their use of technology, both as weapons used against the innocent and as ways for victims to escape their tormentors, usually with a clock ticking ominously in the background. In Promise Me, Coben skillfully grafts this deadline suspense onto the career of his series hero, Bolitar. As in his stand-alones, the novel starts with a purely domestic situation--at a party in his home, attended by friends and their offspring, Bolitar overhears two teen girls talking about driving home drunk from parties. Stung by his own memory of a high-school friend who died in a car crash, Bolitar makes the girls promise to contact him if they ever need a lift or are in trouble. The call does come a few nights later. Myron drives the caller to a friend's house, but she ends up disappearing, and guilt-ridden Myron must use all his resources to try to find what happened. Coben's resurrection of Bolitar works superbly: the melding of high suspense and high technology with a somewhat battered, very canny, questing hero is sure to produce another major hit for the way-hot Coben.

" Promise Me" was my introduction to Myron Bolitar and I feel like I jumped in midstream. I am assuming the characters have been more fully developed in previous works because they seem to arrive with a lot of history I was unaware of. As usual with Mr. Coben the plot is tightly woven with some interesting plot twists. A good, mindless read.

Starts off very slow, but after setting up the charcters he gts into the real plot and it becomes a true Coben - More twists and turns than a corkscrew and a hard to put down great read. Kept me up late while I was reading "just one more page."

Once again, Harlan Coban out does himself. This book was excelant from the beginning. Myron Bolitar is one of the great fiction charectors of our time.

Coben's rich hook-and-twist tale will grab you on the first page and hold you (with shock) until the last as the main character, Myron, tries desperately to save a young girl's life.

This is the first book I've read from this author and I'm thoroughly hooked. It is very difficult for an author to keep me interested enough to continue reading.
I thought the book was easy to read and was difficult to put down.
Generally I've kept to my usual authors (J. Kellerman, J. Evanovich and others) but I just might have found my new favorite.

A hard-edged plot with yet more strands of suburban desperation....After finishing Promis Me, you realize that all the clues to the twist were evident, but you still didn't see it coming.

Not my favorite by this author, but I do love his writing. It's fast paced, and seems to draw you in. I finished it in two sittings.

This Harlan Coben is one of his Myron Bolitar series. Myron, an ex-jock who was injured and lost out on his pro basketball career, has become an agent, and seems to do as much sleuthing as anything else (which can also include a fair amount of romance). This fascinating story as usual includes family (how about that, a hunk who loves his mother and father and actually has a relationship with them), as well as other miscellaneous neighborhood types, including a couple of young girls he wants to keep safe. Good read.

The premise: How far will we go to protect our own? An exceptional novel with a surprise ending. A must-read book that you will not be able to put down! "An addictive page-turner"

Myron Bolitar probably won't make any promises to anyone again soon. When he gave his promise to two young girls it was made out of the moment and impulsive. He didn't know then that it would become a nightmare. 3 weeks after he made the girls promise to give him a call whenever they are in trouble he receives a call in the middle of the night. Aimee Biel, daugther of his long-term friend Claire Biel, calls him and makes him promise to not tell her parents about it. She wants him to pick her up and drive her back to her friends house, only this house isn't her friends house. Myron smells the whole situation is fishy but he trusts Aimee when she leaves the car and enters the front garden through the gate. It doesn't take long until he hears she never was at her friends house and she didn't come back home the next day.
Then there is Katie Rochester who vanished shortly before. They both went to the same High School and Katie's last sign was a withdrawal from an ATM machine. Funnily enough Aimee used the same ATM machine shortly before she made her call to Myron.
Katie is considered a runaway but things don't add up with Aimee's disappearance. Katie has been seen once since her parents notified authorities about her 18-year old daugther's disappearance. Aimee's 18, too, but the investigating police officers have a hard time to believe her to be a runaway, too.
What happened to the girls ? Where did they go and what made them supposedly run away ?
Myron promises Claire to get her daugther back and the clocks ticking. With more then one subject Myron has to figure out what Aimee had to do with two teachers and how his ex-boyfriends father comes into the game.
In the end nothing is like it seems but everything is connected.

Book 8 of the Myron Bolitar series and the first book by Harlan Coben I've ever read. I enjoyed reading it even if I didn't know the characters and their history. I liked how everything was easily connected to each other but still a surprise and unexpected for the reader. I don't know what happened to Myron or his friend Win in the past but I will definitely know what's going to happen in the future. :-)

But Myron is determined to help keep his friends children safe, and so he makes two neighborhood girls promise him that if they are ever in a bind but are afraid to call their parents, they will call him. ANOTHER GREAT STORY FROM MR. COBEN
Just when I thought I had figured out who did what, I was wrong, all the way to the very end! Great ending. Coben always has good endings in his books. This is Myron Bolitar, main character. Ex-Basketball player fame, now sports agent. This book is about helping his childhood friend and her husband find their daughter, it's never quite clear whether she ran away or was abducted or if she is still alive, but in the end all is revealed.
Christine Marie W. (CowgirlFromHanna) reviewed Promise Me (Myron Bolitar, Bk 8) on + 9 more book reviews
Another great suspense by the master of thrillers Harlan Coben! Great summer read!
After 6 years Myron is back. There are characters in this book that were first introduced in a non-Myron Bolitar book (The Innocent) - if you're like me and want to know the backstory then read the Innocent first.. but it isn't a requirement for this book. (Both are good reads, by the way)
I read this book in one sitting.
really good book
This is the first Myron Bolitar novel that I've read and I really liked it. I love his "motley crew", from his best buddy, psychotic Win, to Big Cyndi, a girl you don't want to meet in a dark alley, but definitely want on your side! The wrap-up at the end was a little out there for me, but it did fit I guess, just not what I would have expected. But, it was a great book and I'll be looking for more Myron books!!
Great to have Myron and the gang back. Many things have changed in the last six years, but one thing hasn't -- Myron Bolitar can't pass up a good mystery. Highly recommended, but go back and read the rest of the series first.
A good stand alone book by Coben. Lots of twists, turns and surprises.
Another FABULOUS book by Harlan Coben. Read it in 2 days. Was very hard to put down!!!!!
As always, his Myron Bolitar series latest is a 5 star read! I have duplicate copies with one in large text so will let this one go! A new book never read!
Not one of his more interesting ones (in fact, the least compelling of all of the ones that I read), maybe because there isn't the hint of blood oozing from every page.
This is an awesome book! Harlan Coben is a wonderful writer. "If you're ever in a bind, if you ever need my help, promise me you'll call me. I'll come and get you whereever you are..." This is what Myron tells the teenaged daughter of one of his friends when he hears her talking about driving drunk. He is just trying to be helpful. When he gets a call from her in the middle of the night, he goes to her rescue. Then the girl winds up missing and of course, Myron is blamed.
Myron Bolitar and Win are back with a vegenance.... Great book
A good read and a likable protagonist in Myron Bolitar. Recommended!
Excellent! Excellent! Excellent! This is the first Harlan Coben books I have read and I can't wait to read more. I literally read this book in one weekend because I couldn't put it down!
I loved reading about Myron again. But, I wasn't interested in the 9/11 subplot. I guess being from NYC, I'm not ready for that subject. Even in the smallest context
The story moves fast with a bunch of tense moments that keep you reading on to see what is going to happen. The plot is interesting with enough twists to keep you guessing. However the sidekick characters that help the main character unravel the mystery are pretty one-dimensional. Overall a good read though.
I like the Myron Boitar books. They are fast moving and interesting. It is the kind of book I like to relax with.
Tight story. Fast paced. Great Harlan Coben story with Myron and friends. A real page turner.
I almost didn't read this book -- what a mistake that would have been. It's one of the best books I've ever read!
This is one of the books that features the character Myron. Promise Me revolved around him and didn't have much suspense. I kept waiting for the book to grab me. It never did. It is full of tangled webs with Myron in the middle and mostly focuses on him playing detective. It seemed to keep going in circles and the ending was a let down.
One of the best Myron Bolitar adventures so far! I flew through this book! Myron makes a promise to two teenaged girls that he would pick them up no matter what time if they needed a ride home rather than drive with someone who's been drinking. When he gets a 2:15 AM phone call from Aimee Biel, he picks her up, no questions asked. And that's the last time he'll see her. How far would you go to rescue your child? The twists and turns abound in this book...you won't guess the guilty party until the very end!
When Myron Bolitar throws a party with his new girlfriend, he overhears her daughter talking to her friend about getting a ride home with a drunk driver. Myron confronts them, giving them his card and making them promise to call him if they are ever faced with a situation where they or the driver are drunk or high. A few weeks later Myron receives a 2:00 AM call from the friend, Aimee Biel, needing a ride to a friend's house. Myron picks her up on the streets of Manhatten and transports her to a friends house, no questions asked. But the next morning, Myron discovers that Aimee is missing, her parents have called the police, and Myron is now a suspect in her disappearance.
It's been six years since the last Myron Bolitar book and things have changed. His parents have moved to Florida and Myron bought the house he grew up in. His business has expanded. He now represents actors along with sports figures. And he has a new girlfriend. Myron had quit being an amateur detective, but when he finds out that Aimee is missing, he promises her mother that he will bring her daughter home.
I loved the plot of this book; I had a hard time putting it down. All of the gang is back in this story, including two of my favorites, Win and Big Cyndi. The ending was truly a surprise for me. Never saw it coming. My rating: 4 Stars.

Having read all Coben's stand alones, I then tried the first two books of his series. While they were good, they weren't must-reads for me, the way the stand-alones are. Then Promise Me ended up in my grubby little paws and I've decided to go back and fill in the Myron Bolton books I've missed.
I love the way Coben doesn't reinvent the wheel. If he needs a kick-ass lawyer, he brings back the one you met in a previous book, so characters from his stand-alones are bleeding into the series. That alone would compel me to read these, but I think Coben's just become a better writer than he was when he started, something I don't think happens with most published authors.

Ex-jock turned entertainment agent Myron Bolitar finds himself enmeshed in the disappearance of a close friend's teenage daughter -- and worse still, finds himself a suspect, since he was the last to see her.
Six years.......That's how long it's been since entertainment agent Myron Bolitar last palyed superhero. In six years he hasn't thrown a punch. He hasn't held, much less fired a gun. great book with a twist you wont beleave
Anothergreat Coben novel. The plot changes and twists will keep you guessing until the last page. Highly recommend it.
As always, Coben is excellent. Strange plot -- a little hard to follow at the end.
I like Coben a lot I read this one pretty quickly. It is like a lot of his books in style of writing, but as usual the story has some twists you definately don't see coming. I definately recommend
After a six year hiatus, Myron Bolitar is back. When his friend's daughter turns up missing, he becomes the main suspect in her disappearance as he was the last person to see her alive. great suspenseful novel, with a surprise ending. I hope Coben brings Bolitar back.
And it's another winner for Harlan Coben and his number one man--Myron Bolitar. In this one, Myron overhears two teenagers talking about their friends driving them home while very drunk. He makes them promise that if either of them are caught without a safe ride home--or wherever they need to go--they will call him. No questions asked. Any time of day. 24/7. He gives them each his business card.
Then one of the two girls takes him up on his promise. It's 2 am. He's slightly hung over himself. But, he's the 18 year old's godfather. He tries to find out what's going on. But, he's reminded that he promised not to ask any questions. So, he drops her off where she asks him to, then goes home to sleep it off, and the next day it's obvious to all that she's missing. And, he was the last one to see her.
A great story that anyone with kids can readily relate to. Hard to put down. A joy to read about Win and Esmeralda and Big Cindy again. If you decide to read the book, here's my Promise to you: It'll be worth your while!

I love Harlan Coben. Book is a good read. This is a Myron Bolitar adventure.
Absolutely fantastic book!!
Everything this guy puts out is riveting! Promise me is no exception.
This was an awesome book. Coban once again keeps the reader engaged and in suspense not being able to figure it out.
There are many plot twists and an ending that is believable but quite surprising. It is also great to have Bolitar and Win back in a book. Great reading.
I still can't believe the twist on the end, not to mention the kooky characters strewn throughout. It was a surprisingly good read for a small buy at a yard sale!

Book Description
New York Times bestselling author Harlan Coben returns with PROMISE ME--a searing new thriller and a story of how far we will go to protect our own....
It has been six years since entertainment agent Myron Bolitar last played superhero. In six years he hasn't thrown a punch. He hasn't held, much less fired, a gun. He hasn't called his friend Win, still the scariest man he knows, to back him up or get him out of trouble.
All that is about to change...because of a promise.
The school year is almost over. Anxious families await word of college acceptances. In these last pressure-cooker months of high school, some kids will make the all-too- common and all-too-dangerous mistake of drinking and driving. But Myron is determined to help keep his friends' children safe, and so he makes two neighborhood girls promise him: If they are ever in a bind but are afraid to call their parents, they must call him.
Several nights later, the call comes at 2:00 am, and true to his word, Myron picks up one of the girls in midtown Manhattan and drives her to a quiet cul-de-sac in New Jersey where she says her friend lives.
The next day, the girl's parents discover that their daughter is missing. And that Myron was the last person to see her. Desperate to fulfill a well-intentioned promise turned nightmarishly wrong, Myron races to find her before she's gone forever. But his past will not be buried so easily - for trouble has always stalked him, and his loved ones often suffer. Now Myron must decide once and for all who he is and what he will stand up for if he is to have any hope of saving a young girl's life.
My Review
This book was a bit different from Coben's other Myron Bolitar books because Myron is the main suspect. The plot was intricate, witty and suspenseful which makes for a great mystery read. From the beginning, I was hooked and the twists and turns kept me guessing right up to the surprise ending. I would have to say that I think this is Coben's best Myron Bolitar book. I would highly recommend this book if you like laugh-out-loud suspense mysteries and I look forward to reading his next Bolitar book.

Not as good as The Innocent, but still very good. Suspenseful.

I love all books by this author--great read.
This one was a page-turner. I couldn't put it down til I finished it.
Myron makes a young girl promise him something ( he had very good intentions ) that ends up getting him in hot water.
Another great Myron Bolitar book! Can't wait for the next one!
Wonderful book! So glad Myron is back!!!
wow...I love Harlan Coben
This is a very good book and not a lot of murders, just a good mystery.

My first Coben, I really enjoyed it. How life can change just from and innocent promise made to a teenager and her friend.
Very good book! This is my first Myron Bolitar novel, now I must go back and read the previous in the series!
