Book #4 in the Coming to America series. Karola Breit had come from Germany expecting to marry her childhood sweetheart. But she found that he had married and had children. Even though his wife had died, she couldn't bring herself to marry him, so she became his housekeeper.
I enjoy this series of books as the characters are believable and interesting. You find yourself turning the pages wondering how it will all turn out.

Karola wonders why she's never heard from her fiance, Jakob, since he's left for America. Years have passed, eleven to be exact, and letters quit coming. Did he die? Is he hurt? Then one day, she receives a letter asking her to come be his wife. Little does she know, Jakob married and had children with his wife. His wife now deceased and needing a mother. As Karola arrives off the train from her long voyable across the ocean, she's shocked to see Jakbob's children. Now, Jakob wonders if he made a mistake bringing Karola. Jakob said he wrote Karola about his wife, but she never received the letter. Karola agrees to stay on through harvest to care for Jakob's children. Will she continue to stay after harvest?
