I've read all of the books in this series thus far and I always enjoy them. I liked this one a lot too, but I could have done without the chapters devoted to Helen's sister being blackmailed. (I sort of remembered what had happened in the 9th book and that the blackmailer had shown up, but I feel that this is an unnecessary plot- the rest of this book was good enough on its own that it wasn't needed. I hope it gets resolved in book 11 so it doesn't keep popping up in every new book.)

Another great book from this author! Its fun & well written.
Fun, funny, and a great read for a lazy summer afternoon.
10th in the Dead-End Job Mystery Series
Helen Hawthorne and her new husband Phil have opened their own Private Investigation Agency. Thanks to their friends at the Coronado Tropic Apartments they get their first clients.
Shelby wants them to spy on her husband who she believes is being unfaithful and Gus wants them to investigate the death of his brother than happened back in the 1980's.
To follow Shelby's husband Helen takes another Dead-End Job at Fantastic Fitness, since Shelby's husband Bryan seems to spend most of his waking hours there. She gets the job with the condition to get her body back in shape, so in addition to the actual job she needs to also spend time working out.
The other case keeps Phil hopping during the day but he also needs Helen by his side as the investigation leads them into the late evening and sometimes early morning hours. It is not enough that one job expects her to lose weight, but both jobs are putting an enormous weight upon her shoulders. Can they get pumped up and solve these cases and others that pop up along the way or will the weight of it all cause Helen to collapse under the pressure?
When I reviewed the last book in this series Half-Price Homicide I was worried about the future of this series because that book tied up a lot of loose ends, but Elaine Viets didn't let me down, she is taking Helen in a new direction with her own Private Investigation Agency. Due to the clients the agency takes on Helen's dead end job adventures continue and I am loving it!!! Great mysteries, some crazy new characters plus the wacky ones we have grown to love, the residents of the Coronado Tropics Apartments are back. These books are so much fun to read and this one is no exception. Loved it from start to finish and can't wait for the next one!!

For those of us who were so POed, and disappointed in the event in book 9, you might be glad to hear that book 10 is better.
I read this 292 page book in one day. I was so thrilled with the story line. When I read the last book in this series I was so disgusted with the Main characters choices in the last book, that I stopped reading the series. In this book 10, Helen's bad choices in book 9 are still an issue, and she has not told her newlywed husband, Phil what happened. Phil and Helen have started a Private detective agency, in Fort Lauderdale. They get 2 new cases. One client wants her to investigate your fitness crazed husband. This causes Helen to get an undercover job at a fitness center, with some pretty serious body builders. The other case is 25 year old suicide, that the surviving brother believes was a murder. All is well that ends well, but the bad choices in book 9 are still not resolved, and I see now why the issue might have been introduced as an ongoing plot. I dont want to say what it was in book 9 since it really is a spoiler, and you might want to be disappointed on your own time and in your own way. But like I said, it is adding to the ongoing story, so I see its purpose.
I wonder if the book 9 issue will be resolved in book 11 but I doubt it. I think it is a gimmick to keep our Main Character on the wrong side of the law, like she was in the book 1-8.

In the 10th book of the Dead End Job Mysteries, Helen and Phil have opened their own PI agency and are looking for clients. With help from the tenants of the Coronado they land two cases. Of course that means Helen has to get a dead end job to keep an eye on the client's man. That leaves Phil to look into the cold case. Will they solve their cases and get the much needed boost to keep their new agency afloat?
Very easy read. Did not care for the characters.
