Political intrigue (& a history lesson) in the courts of Mary, Queen of Scots and Queen Elizabeth. Lady Gwenyth Macleod & her love, Laird Rowan Graham, are caught in the machinations between the two great queens. Very well-written, with no explicity sex scenes so common in this genre of romance writers. But if you like politics or history, this book is for you.

I liked this book, although it was not my favorite of the series. The thing that really sticks out for me about this book is that while I was reading it, I was feeling bad about all the time the main characters had to spend apart. I like the fact that the characters in this book and in all of the series are on the fringe of so many historical events. I find myself researching the actual events while I am reading the books. Very interesting.
This was my first Harlequin romance book and I have to say that I really enjoyed it. The story was very captivating, the historical aspects (which were well researched) were not just there "for show" but actually played an important role in the plot, and it was not all about sex the way many books in this genre are perceived to be about. I was very taken in by this story about the queen's lady-in-waiting and her love/hate relationship with Laird Rowan Graham as they both try to remain loyal to Queen Mary, Scotland, to each other, and to their own beliefs.
This book was my first from Shannon Drake. I did not realize this was a series and the books are good on their own.
Gwenyth is a smart lady that is loyal to her Queen and would do and say anything to protect the Queen of Scots. Rowan is chosen to accompany Gwenyth to England to meet Queen Elizabeth and that is where the romance begins. I liked the loyatly Gwenyth had for her Queen Mary but I did think that at times it was too much. Overall the book was an enjoyable read and I am now interested in reading the series.
The romance is hot but does not sizzle and I like that in this book it did not take away from the premise.
