As with Sara Ackerman's Red Sky over Hawaii, the history of Radar Girls is 1941. Hawaii. Pearl Harbor. WWII. The specific history is of the Women's Air Raid Defense (WARD). Within this history is the story of twenty-three year old Daisy Wilder in Waialua, O'ahu. For Daisy, this journey is also about finding friendship and acceptance and a sisterhood. Ultimately, the book does what I love about historical fiction. It teaches me something new and sends me off on a search to learn more about the actual history.

Radar Girls by Sara Ackerman is a unique WWII novel with its setting in Hawaii. The story was inspired by the actual Women's Air Raid Defense (WARD), a civilian organization that worked with the military to provide air defense for Hawaii. It was formed in December 1941 after the attack on Pearl Harbor, and this event is described in the very first chapter.
Most of the man characters are women from a variety of backgrounds who answer the call to be WARDs, including military wives and local residents of upper and lower social classes. Readers follow along as they form friendships, learn their new roles, and find ways to relieve stress and have a little fun.
Their interactions with the military pilots and officers were interesting since the program was new and unique. Of course there's a romance and happily-ever-after ending.
I read this on a cold, snowy weekend so the descriptions of lush Hawaiian landscapes and warm ocean breezes provided a delightful escape. The audiobook is narrated by Cassandra Campbell, one of my favorites. I always appreciate having her voice in my ears, telling me another intersting story.

This book was inspired by the real WARDS (Women's Air Raid Defense) which was a top secret program replacing male soldiers in the war zone during WWII. Daisy Wilder loves horses more than people until the attack on Pearl Harbor. She joins the WARDS which many people resist but Daisy is determined to prove her worth. This book transports the reader to wartime Hawaii. It is a tale of pioneering unsung heroines and I enjoyed reading about the women's courage, strength and sisterhood. I look forward to reading another book by Sara Ackerman as her books are about strong women. I would recommend this book to those who like to read a captivating story with a little bit of romance.
