A very different venue for a love story from Sandra Brown. She deals with several subjects in the book - the Depression, racial prejudice and autism among them -- in a very caring and compassionate way. A good book which I really enjoyed.

A very different book by Sandra Brown, but also very moving. This book is different from what she has been writing for the past 20 years. She was unsure how it would be accepted by her fans. I not only accepted it, I loved it! It shows she is an excellent storyteller.

A little different from what she usually writes but makes a story happening in the 1930's sound like the movie 'Places in the Heart' which is a very good movie and I'd reccommend it to all. Rainwater is the story of a dying man gone to live in a boarding house and the effect he has on the lives of others.

Sandra Brown is one of my favorite authors. I was hesitant at first to read this book since it is different from what she usually writes. But I'm glad I read it. I learned a few things reading this book.

I liked this story about hard-tackle life in Texas in the Depression. I like fiction that weaves in historical facts so that I learn something. These characters seemed real for the 30's and its prim and proper boarding house times.

Sandra Brown is one of my favorite authors, so I was excited to read this book. She has stepped away from both the mystery and the romance with this novel and has come up with something I thought was superb. I have read this book twice and the copy that I got on PBS was actually a gift to a friend whom I thought would like it as much as I did. This is a great story and Brown tells it very well. I highly recommend this book...and don't be surprised if you find yourself a bit emotional at the end.

This book is more in line with Sandra Brown's early romance novels, instead of the romantic suspense books she currently pens.
All in all, this is one of the most well-written, best plotted books I've read in a long time. Great story, good flow and her signature twist at the end.

I LOVED this story. It is a little different from the norm for Brown and in away I think that is where some of the charm comes from. It seems to be written more from the heart. I only hope this is made into a movie.
The story is about racism, poverty and fear during the Great Depression in a small town in Texas. It is also a love story and addresses mental handicaps during a time when ignorance and fear where the norm.

Sandra Brown is one of my favorite authors. This was a different type of book for her, but I really enjoyed it. I work at an autism center, and that is one of the reasons I wanted to read it. She was very realistic with the autistic character and the love story is believable and sweet. Mr. Rainwater's story made you believe again in human goodness...I would definitely recommend this book.

I have never read any of this author's other books. She said this one was different from what she usually writes. If so, she should write more like this. It was really good. Mr Rainwater comes to a boarding house to die. Before the end of the book, he becomes involved in the community's problems and the problems of his landlady who has a retarded son. Get the tissues ready, it ends sadly. However, there is much that happens before the end. I highly reccommend this book. Life is all about relationships and when and what we do with them. Watch out for the twist at the end.

I was really pleasantly surprised by this book. I had never read anything by Sandra Brown and just randomly found this book on PBS. I ended up reading it in 4 or 5 days and got really wrapped up in the story. It is a fairly quick and easy read but I was surprised by how engrossed I began in the story and Brown's wonderful writing style.

This is one of the best books I have read all year. I have enjoyed many of Sandra Brown's romances and suspense novels but this historical novel is really quite different from any of the others. This original bittersweet story that depicts life during the Great Depression and the wonderful characters involved is riveting and brings that time period to life. I could hardly wait to see how it all ended but sad when it did. I wanted it to go on and on and continue the engrossing tale of Ella, her autistic son, Solly, David Rainwater and the others and the true meaning of the word "love". It is definitly a keeper!

Surprisingly fabulous book! Was not expecting this wonderful story about 1900's dust bowl in Texas. The racist tensions, the depression, autism, just a great book ...Sandra Brown at her best!
Never read a Sandra Brown book before, so I can't comment on this not being her typical kind of book. I really liked this one. It was an easy read, but the thing that I liked the most was that the characters really drew me in. I found myself wanting to get back to the book when I wasn't reading it.
"Rainwater" captured me from the first page, and held my attention all the way through. A very different Sandra Brown book, but a nice departure. Gives the reader much to think about along the journey, with surprises along the way. Highly recommend.

A beautiful story illustrating love in its various forms in a hardscrabble community during the Depression. Restrained in its writing style and historically interesting. Brought on tears at the end. Highly recommended even if you're not normally drawn to romantic suspense (which this really is not but which Brown is known for).

WOW! I have read a few of her other books but this is the best in my opinion. The depth of the story is unlike any other. This is a true love story.
When Dr. Kincaid brings Mr. Rainwater to meet Ella at her boarding house, she has no idea her life is about to change. This is one of the best books I have read in a long time. Mr. Rainwater immediately takes to Ella's 10 year old disabled little boy Solly and begins to try to establish a relationship with him even though Ella keeps Solly very close to her at all times. Mr. Rainwater takes a room at the boarding house along with three other boarders. The setting is during the great depression in Texas. This book is not your mushy love story. It is a definite page turner with great characters and much drama.
my wife was the one who wanted 2 read this book, and she enjoyed it! she said the book ha a kinda sad ending, but then again, there really was no other way for it 2 end. it makes u think about how we are right where we are supposed 2 be, and that if u believe, u can find happiness when u thot u never would.

A bit of a departure for Sandra Brown. I liked the way it ended. I liked the characters. A period in American history that is shown here not chosen very often but one I like.
Though this wasn't the normal Sandra Brown (who says she has to write just one way????) I thought it was very good.. being the mother of a "gifted" child, it may of caught my interest more then others, but whatever the case, I did like the book!

I listened to this book a few times. I was written for back in the days of 1939. The storyline is very good and heart warming.
It's hard to believe that Rainwater was written by the same author who wrote Texas! Lucky. Rainwater's characters are well developed, and the emotions underlying them are almost palpable.
Excellent book about hard tackle Texas during the Depression, racial problems, autism, love, and hard times. The only thing that kept me from giving it a 5 was that it broke my heart. Definitely one to pass on to friends.

I thought this book was just OK. Totally different than the usual Sandra Brown fair. It didn't really draw me in. It was a light, easy read, but kind of boring in my opinion.
