First, I love mail-order marriage stories and this one promised to be different. From the replies Cassandra Hamilton gets from her newspaper ad, she selects someone she knew several years before -- Jack McColton. This promised to be a different spin on the usual mail-order wedding scenario. I was excited.
At the time they knew each other, Jack went to Cassandra and told her that her fiancee was not what she expected or wanted. Cassandra was horrified by Jack's comments and she rejected him. Jack left Chicago the same night. Then Cassandra learned Jack was right. In the intervening years, Jack got his veterinary degree and started a ranch and his vet business.
Cassandra experienced more grief when she and her family was caught in the Chicago Fire. Cassandra's only two relatives (her father and sister) were killed and Cassandra was severely burned on the face.
Unfortunately, this story was the same-old, same-old. I'd hoped for a new perspective but didn't get it. There was one plot device that I just didn't believe -- Jack had Cassandra investigated. That might happen in today's world, but it seems unlikely in that day and time. Besides, if Jack already knew Cassandra (rather well), why would he have her investigated?
