If you are looking for a nice, slow story -- this is not it! The two main characters are evenly balanced and race from one wild adventure to another; readers will need to tie themselves into their chairs.
Trying to escape from her father (who wants to marry her off like a prize heifer), Piper Sullivan is sharp enough to know that her father will be after her in a heartbeat. So she wears a disguise that ages her and Piper takes on a crotchety-old-woman's persona. She's heading west to find her sister, who also evaded the machinations of their father.
At the end of the railway line, Piper has to change to a stagecoach to continue her journey. There she meets Ranger Quinn Callahan, traveling undercover, trying to find the bandits who are robbing the stages. Quinn watches the feisty old woman but thinks there is something strange about her.
Before long, the bandits attack the stagecoach; Piper and Quinn struggle with a runaway stage. After several exciting pages, Quinn finds that the old grouchy lady isn't so old or ugly. Thus begins an interesting, fun story of two matched characters with lots of character and sass.
I found the book to be a quick read because I couldn't put the story aside.
