After having read Monkeys and Evening, I looked forward to reading another Minot book. This one, however, was sadly lacking at many levels. Although a slender book, it is totally based on thoughts and reflections of two people during one sex act. My goodness, I can't imagine any sexual encounter lasting so long as to reflect ad nauseum! I felt no real depth of emotion from either character, and it amounted to little more than painful drivel. I do not recommend this book, although other offers by Minot are very well written. Proof that the best authors can still miss the mark at times.

The emotional and psychological paths that two former lovers take during a brief interlude highlight this extraordinary book. Although small in length, this work of fiction explores motivations and consequences of love that go far beyond the lovers' expectations.
