The heroine is three dimensional, and the plot is good. The love story part felt sketchy and uninvolving. This was my first taste of the series, and I enjoyed it enough to make me interested in reading more.

I enjoyed this mystery immensely. It is full of quick action, with many murder cases coming in on top of each other--all for Cochise County in Arizona in the hottest time of the summer. The County's Medical Examiner is away on his honeymoon, causing Sherriff Joanna Brady no option but to work with the M. E. from the next county over. They get along like oil and water, but since they must work together, they finally come to a workable truce. This is a case that has the Sheriff and all her Deputies, plus the M E running full out for the week trying to apprehend the killer before he does more damage than he already has. There are also personal matters pressing in on Joanna during the whole week that she has to deal with. All in all, this is an action filled fast read. I gave it a 5 star rating.

Sheriff Joanna Brady is the law in Cochise County, and she will never allow her personal trials to interfere with the job she was elected to do especially now that death has invaded Bisbee,Arizona and has shattered the small desert town's fragile peace.
A Joanna Brady mystery
Excellent book with a great ending.
No need to have read the others as there is plenty of background provided. Jance puts in lots of description of the country, the pacing is good, and she's evolving Brady's relationship with her deputies and making her more secure in her job. Most of the characters are pretty well-fleshed out (I was glad not to see much of Brady's mother). It's a good solid story, a fast read, but nothing to really make it stand out from the rest. Nonetheless I enjoyed it and I'll be going on with the series.

Sheriff Joanna Brady is the law in Cochise County, and she will never allow her personal trials to interfere with the job she was elected to do--- especially now that death has invaded Bisbee, Arizona and has shattered the small desert town's fragile peace.
A gun dealer has died violently, and his stock of high-powered weapons has been cleaned out. Suspiscion falls upon rancher Alton Hosfield, an armed separatist at war with the federal government and the local law--- with everyone, in fact, whom he perceives as a threat to his independent way of life.
Joanna Brady suspects the solution is not so cut and dried--- especially when the cold blooded slaying is followed by a series of others, equally horrific and perplexing At best, an incendiary "Ruby Ridge" situation is brewing. At worst, a maniacal serial killer has come to feed on the unsuspecting community. But Joanna's preoccupation with bringing a murderer to justice could take a terrible toll on her private life...and unravel threads of family, love, and responsiblity that might never again be retied.
