:) Yes - times they are a-changing!
At the age of 4 (or so I believe!) I learned to read Sitting on the floor in the attic of our house I looked at the letters M-O-U-S-E And saw a mouse I happily read my Early Reader books And loved listening to my parents Reading to me from "real" books Then I went to school See Dick See Jane See Spot Mrs. Luskin’s reading instruction class Felt like death The boredom was so heavy and thick I could hardly breathe Listening to my first grade classmates Struggling with those idiotic texts Was torture to me ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Note: (I wrote this poem for a contest on a website allpoetry.com, which uses an algorithm to determine the “strong” vs. “weak” words in the poems submitted there. Generally, nouns and verbs are considered “strong”; adjectives and adverbs “weak.”) I was quite amused to see good ole white-bread Dick transformed into a "strong word" as "dick" LOL. And yet "death" is not even noticed by this algorithm! |
