You think a diary would be boringly repetitive and shallow, but not this one. It is a wonderful walk through Reagan's memories with insights into how he struggled with various issues, his firm belief that trickle down economics would work (40 years later we know it does not work), how his warm personable nature earned him friends and respect.
Even his enemies could not but like him. His deep dedication to Nancy is very clear through out his writings as is his sense of humor. His personality won over Gorbachev just when the Soviet Union was collapsing from decades of mismanagement. There is little sign of his mental decline in the end, and it stays warm and insightful to the very end.
