Darrow is a Red, the lowest of basically a caste society. He lives on Mars and toils each day with hard work. He is a young late teenage married man. He loves his wife Eo with all his heart. His family means everything to him. Despite their hardship they love to dance together. He is highly skilled but Red never gets noticed for anything.

That's when his entire world gets changed completely. He begins to learn more about the Golds (highest of the "caste" they have). He wants to change the world and live the dream of his wife.

I really loved the first few chapters of this book so much. It was amazing. It suddenly reminded me of a mixture of well-known sagas/books that I have read such as Dune, Ender's Game (they even mention "Wiggin" in it which was the only fictional name mentioned out of "Alexander" and "Caesar" and well known real people who lived), Percy Jackson series, and Hunger Games. It just became a tale like I've read before and although it was very well written and had great descriptions throughout, I felt like it was lacking originality. If you have read all of those above mentioned books, you'd see it too (which my husband will see when he reads it). If you haven't you'll probably love this book and the series. I will certainly read the other books though!

In case you are concerned with content, there is a lot of language in it as well as violence and gore. There really wasn't much sexual content other than knowing if someone was involved intimately (married couple at that) or people kissing and talk of rape (though concluding of its wrongness).

I loved this book!!! I was sucked in on the first page!
Darrow is a Red and a slave to Mars, until he finds that life isn't really the way it's been painted for his people. He become a Gold with the help of the Sons of Ares and enters the Institute where he must fight to procure himself Primus to obtain a higher rank to free his people from their unknown life of slavery without his enemies any the wiser. His strength, love, and loyalty for his friends and family make him an easy character to cheer for and like. This book is definitely a new favorite and I can't wait to start on the second book!
