very good read and it really helps one to see a whole different side of the whole post-civil war/reconstruction era, the promises and desertion of the federal government once they got these folks to finally believe they could have something in the world and then not doing anything to assist, knowing that some would never let it happen. imagine having the right to vote for 10 years, and then having it taken away for decades after.

Family saga, second novel by the author who wrote CANE RIVER. A blend of historical fact and deeply moving fiction, going back to 1873

Another great novel by Lalita Tademy!

I loved the way it followed her family. It starts at the Colfax Riot and follows the ups and downs of the family.

True life story, heart wrenching, amazing.

I didn't enjoy this book as much as her first, Cane River. It was still a good read and was very interesting. I just didn't find myself as invested in the families as I did when reading Cane River.

I just finished this book and loved it! I liked the way the author started out with the oldest generation focusing on the main characters and did the same with each generation following it. I read Cane River a long time ago and cannot remember the details but I remember that it was a very good book. Whoever has not read these two books by Lalita Tademy should definitely add them to their TBR list.
Although fiction, the author's research and writing talent leads the reader to believe this mostly true book is non-fiction. This story is hard to put down and draws you in to the lives of the characters. Excellent reading.
april 13, 1873. What happened that day in the small southern town of colfax, Louisiana, was called "The Colfax Riot." But it was something far more devasting.....Weaving together history and the story of her family, Lalita Tademy.
