The Red Tent is the story of Dinah, a minor character in Old Testament scripture, who, in the Bible was supposedly raped and her brothers consequently killed the man and the rest of the men of his village. After that tragedy, Dinah is never heard from again (in the Bible). The Red Tent addresses this story from Dinah's point of view and she becomes a fully fleshed out character, along with her 4 "mothers".
Besides just a great story, I really appreciated how it took something that is usually an inconvenience to most women. It turned it into something special, treasured, and a time to celebrate being a woman, to "fellowship" if you will with other women... and ultimately feel powerful in our womanly resolve, instincts, and strength.

I was really impressed with this book! It tells the story of Dinah, a woman briefly mentioned in the Bible as being the daughter of Jacob, who was raped and her brothers avenge her by killing that man and all the men from his city. Jacob is well known person from the Bible, as are many of his sons, but only that little bit is mentioned about his daughter. I love how this book gives Dinah (and consequently other women from the Bible) a clear personality and identity. Jacob's wives are given clear personalities and identities as well (some are better noted in the Bible than others). I feel that this book tried to present the life of women during biblical times as accurately as possible, showing their common bonds through various stages of life (childbirth and child-rearing, menstruation periods spent in the Red Tent, death, etc). Dinah is painted as being strong-willed and intelligent, though bound by the societal norms of the time. I honestly can't say enough about it & I fear saying too much in fear of spoiling in, so just go read it! :-)

This is a great novel for the both the faith-filled and faith-less. I believe women of all walks of life will relate to the characters in this story - Jacob's wives. Although this is fiction, it does present probably the most historically accurate view so far of the women in Jacob's life. I only wish they would make this into a movie!

Fascinating! Love the historical detail, drama, and story of womanhood.

A very unbiblical made up account of the story of Dinah. Terrible book. If you love the Word of God and want to stay true to Scripture then this is not the book for you!
