The Red Tent is the story of Dinah, a minor character in Old Testament scripture, who, in the Bible was supposedly raped and her brothers consequently killed the man and the rest of the men of his village. After that tragedy, Dinah is never heard from again (in the Bible). The Red Tent addresses this story from Dinah's point of view and she becomes a fully fleshed out character, along with her 4 "mothers".
Besides just a great story, I really appreciated how it took something that is usually an inconvenience to most women. It turned it into something special, treasured, and a time to celebrate being a woman, to "fellowship" if you will with other women... and ultimately feel powerful in our womanly resolve, instincts, and strength.

I was really impressed with this book! It tells the story of Dinah, a woman briefly mentioned in the Bible as being the daughter of Jacob, who was raped and her brothers avenge her by killing that man and all the men from his city. Jacob is well known person from the Bible, as are many of his sons, but only that little bit is mentioned about his daughter. I love how this book gives Dinah (and consequently other women from the Bible) a clear personality and identity. Jacob's wives are given clear personalities and identities as well (some are better noted in the Bible than others). I feel that this book tried to present the life of women during biblical times as accurately as possible, showing their common bonds through various stages of life (childbirth and child-rearing, menstruation periods spent in the Red Tent, death, etc). Dinah is painted as being strong-willed and intelligent, though bound by the societal norms of the time. I honestly can't say enough about it & I fear saying too much in fear of spoiling in, so just go read it! :-)

This is a great novel for the both the faith-filled and faith-less. I believe women of all walks of life will relate to the characters in this story - Jacob's wives. Although this is fiction, it does present probably the most historically accurate view so far of the women in Jacob's life. I only wish they would make this into a movie!

A very unbiblical made up account of the story of Dinah. Terrible book. If you love the Word of God and want to stay true to Scripture then this is not the book for you!

Having gone to Catholic school for 12 years, I found this story interesting...I loved how she developed the strength of the female characters and made stories much more realisitic than the way they are portrayed in the bible (though the book is fiction)

I really enjoyed this book. Once again I was taken back in time. Dinah is a beautiful girl. Such a tragic love loss though.

When it comes to gernerational novels I tend to get bored with them. That didn't happen when I read this book. It is a good story about a woman's life who lived during the time of Jesus. It is well researched and put together. I think every woman should read it.
One of my favorite books of all time.
this was a wonderful book. it made me stop and think and after reading this book i really got back into reading my bible. because i knew the story heard it many time but ater reading this i then went to the bible and read it again and it helped tie all the stories together i had learned as a child and currently still studding the bible even more.
This is a great read....very unusual telling of the life of Jacob's daughter. I found the writing to be honest and reflective of the Biblical times. This book has made for a great discussion, re-reading and study of the story from Bible.
Story of strong woman in biblical times.
I was so surprised at reading this book. Supposedly a "Christian" book; but was shocked at all of the numerous discussions about beastiality & masturbation!! It was gross!
