This story takes place in Llanagethin, a rural village in Wales. It concerns another police detective who is involved with a reporter (I recently read another series with the same policeman-reporter dichotomy). Generally, that combination of police and reporter would be anathema because they operate at cross purposes. However, this couple, Ben and Stacy, are mindful of personal and professional borders.

The odd part of this tale is that individuals are shot, along with their pet dogs. This ups the ante because pets aren't usually victims. Because this is a small village with few visitors, the townspeople are surprised to learn that a military rifle was used.

In the end, there was no explanation as to why the dogs were killed. In fact, according to the perp's beliefs, the dogs had done no wrong. So why was there such a to-do about the loss of each dog? Now I know that when an author includes, "A thrilling murder with a big twist," this is overhyped. This book was a disappointment.
